My youngest is now 18months and has been eating a normal diet for a long time now but still doesnt have solid poo's and some days goes 4-5 times. This can at times literally burn his bum breaking the skin even if i change him as soon as he's gone. Anyone have experience of this or any suggestions? He's a healthy active boy otherwise.
Cheers all

4-5 times/day might well just be normal for him. But should not be burning his skin. Does he eat a lot of fruit or fibre? Some say that toddlers should be on low fibre diets. I think going for high fat rather than worrying about fibre makes sense.

try googling toddler diarrhoea - they are supposed to grow out of it.

this pdf file gives some info to help: Toddler diarrhoea

He might need more fat. I think I've read that it is a possible cause of toddler diarrhoea. Toddlers need 1/4 to 1/3 of fat in their diet - a lot more than adults. Also not too much fibre either otherwise food passes through too quickly.

we have the same thing with our toddler -22 mths. she always does 'messy poos' - not diarrhoea but squashed all over the place - never a solid poo. i was going to speak to the hv about it. she eats a lot of fruit and usually has 3 weetabix for bfast - have just cut blueberries out of her diet as didnt think that helped

we had this and then worked out she has food intolerances. If we give her dairy, soy or egg then the next day nappies required a clothes change.

Too much fruit?

JennyWren · 11/04/2012 22:24

My DD had toddler diarrhoea - she did grow out of it, eventually. We cut out fruit juice, and limited fresh and dried fruit quantities - she ate plenty of veg, so we stuck with 'little and varied' for fruit. Also, refined carbs are the order of the day - white bread, rice and pasta instead of wholemeal - as the gut is taking longer to develop to a stage that they can efficiently digest the wholemeal stuff. White bread etc. is easier to digest. I can't remember when she got over it but she was fine by the time she started potty training, so definitely before about 30 months.

I had the same problem with my 12mo. It was a combination of teething and too much fruit. On the advice of MNers I stopped all fruit after lunchtime, and simplified his meals (cue in my user name really!). He was fine withing a couple of weeks. Good luck!

Thanks for that PDF Seona. I think thats what we've got going on - its good to know how to help it.

My 2.5yo is only just growing out of this now. Toddler diarrhoea. I think it's very normal.

If the poo burns his skin this can be a sign of lactose intolerance causing too much acid to be excreted. I would try giving him Lactofree milk and see if it it helps. It really made a big difference to my little boy.
Ps the Lactofree milk is delicious unlike soya milk!
