Ds and dd both had a fever + cough a couple of weeks ago. Ds needed antibiotics but he has asthma and usually does, dd got over it. Almost all of ds' class was off with it including the teacher.

Oh god, don't get me started on the dry cough...

A week before half term in Feb DS1 (15) was really unwell with a fever and dry hacking cough. He had two days off school (could not afford anymore as he is in Yr10 and doing exams). Had the half term to recuperate, spent most of his time on the settee. On the 4th week I took him to the dr's who said he had a temp and his glands were up and he had a chest infection (he is also asthmatic), gave him ab's. The following week we went back to the dr's who had to give him stronger ab's. He has coughed so much he has been sick on numerous occasions.

After he finished the second course, his cough went away for ooooh all of about 5 days.... I took him back to the dr's last week who said his chest was now clear and he had some bronchial irritation. Tuesday he had a tummy bug and was sick and Wed he woke up with a streaming cold and the full blown cough back again. He has been shocking. He has had a constant headache with the cough and his ribs have been ever so sore

I bought some Olbas Oil yesterday which seemed to help last night.

sorry to hear that. it's a rotter that's for sure. dd used to have an asthma cough ages 2-6, and has had to have antibiotics in the past.

we have been here that many times, and i do remember that no medicine works, so won't be giving her any. I pray she gets over it like your dd.

I tried that old trick of rubbing Vic on the soles of the feet and putting a pair of socks on at night. It really did seem to help DS2 at night ( coughed all day instead).

piratecat · 06/04/2012 20:19

bloody hell bellavita, what a time of it you and he have had.

this is my worry, my dd sounds like your ds with finding it so hard to get rid of.

she has had so much time off school over the yrs, that i am very thankful it's holidays, i hope your son improves soon.

yes the Vicks has sometimes worked for us, but other times the smile aggrivates her cough.

When he was younger I used to get in bed with him to prop him up during the night so he would cough less. I am sorry to say he could be "barking" for weeks. He has a blue puffer and a purple one. The asthma nurse gave him the purple one last year when he was only blowing about 150 on the peak flow meter.

I am thankful it is the holidays too.

Hope your dd goes better soon.

piratecat · 06/04/2012 21:20

oh i know, it's really unpredictable. Sometimes they get over it in a week or so but like you said it can come back quickly. Nothing i ever did helped her when she was little.

have 2 of them at it here, ds1 (almost 4) diagnosed with chest infection Monday, posted on here as worried as asthmatic, he's just picked up. ds2 (6 months) seen by GP wed, given antibiotics but wait and see if he get's over it himself, he didn't, started antibiotics today. I'm on my knees with tiredness, cough cough cry\scream - repeat at half hourly intervals every might for a week, it's torture! hope your dd is better soon.

piratecat · 06/04/2012 21:46

oh blimey dribbleface, i am sorry both your dc have it too. Bloody typical that it's now a long weekend and i have no way of getting to any antibiotics.

this always happens.

OP posts:
dribbleface · 06/04/2012 21:58

is there no walk-in near you? that's why my lovely GP prescribed ds2's on wed, so i wasn't stuck at the weekend. sorry for the self indulgent post was feeling sorry for myself!

BellaVita · 06/04/2012 22:06

I would also try a walk in too pirate, or ring the out of hours gp.

Sorry you are also having a crap time dribble.

piratecat · 06/04/2012 22:28

dribble, what did your gp prescribe. i have a box of erythromycin here. it's an antibiotic i never used from Feb, tablets as i am allergic to penicillin.

They are prescribed to kids, dd is ten, and can take tabs. She is on ponstan for her period pains, doc just readjusted dose for her weight.

No walk in place, live in countryside, but could at a push see an out of hours but it's 30 mile round trip. Which of course i would do if she doesn't show improvement say by sunday.

OP posts:
leftmysociallifeatthedoor · 07/04/2012 04:24

Please don't give her your antibiotics. If she isn't allergic to penicillin then amoxycillin would probably be a better bet if it is a chest infection. If you think it is then I'd take her to get seen today, better that than to let it get hold, then hopefully she can fully recover by the end of the holidays.

dribbleface · 07/04/2012 08:33

both boy's have amoxcillin. wish i had started ds2's straight away rather than doing as doctor suggested as he's really rough now. based on that i would take her.

BellaVita · 07/04/2012 08:43

I cannot remember either what DS1 had on both occasions.

I wouldn't give her those tablets either, I would rather do the 30 mile round trip - I too live out in the countryside and sometimes it can be a pain, but better that than to have her worse.

piratecat · 07/04/2012 09:57

oh i won't, you are right i won't give her them, i will keep them for me. She had a rough night, and is still coughing now but all in all is quite well in herself, and playing. fingers crossed it will improve, if not we can get to doc. It's those late evening moments when they are ill, and can't get to sleep that test my patience greatly.

how she doing now? better i hope?
