Cause of candida in older child?

rainbowinthesky · 05/04/2012 19:12

Dd keeps getting vaginal thrush every few months and gp has said they will investigate cause if she gets it once more. She is 8. I've googled causes but none apply to her - only had antibiotics once in her life, doesnt have diabetes.

She does have IBS and GERD (reflux) but they say there is no connection.

Washing power and conditioner?

rainbowinthesky · 05/04/2012 19:44

We stopped using conditioner a long time ago and only use nonbiological powder.

Also anti bacterial products cause the fungal presence in our skin to go overboard as there is no competition. As a teenager my mum changed all our soap to an anti bacterial one and as a result i got fungal skin infections.

rainbowinthesky · 05/04/2012 19:49

Nope, just use simple soap or similar. Dh always gets antibacterial spray for kitchen and wont believe me about it being a bad idea but dont think this would cause dd to have thrush.

Apparently you can starve candida out with a sugar free diet- as in not even bread or milk- for 3 weeks. Might be worth at least cutting down?

rainbowinthesky · 05/04/2012 19:54

Yes, it is worth considering. Trouble is she is on a very restricted diet already because of IBS and reflux.

If she has IBS then she is probably zinc deficient as IBS affects absorption. Not sure what diet your dd is on, but removing gluten could help IBS and would remove the medium on which fungal infections grow.
Has she had any liver enzyme tests recently? Check ALk Phos which might show whether she is zinc deficient (like my ds was).
I would get some suitable zinc supplement too.

rainbowinthesky · 06/04/2012 18:18

Hi. She is on non-irritating diet and just come off no fructose diet. She cant have anything fried, chocolate, tomatoes, onions, coated like fishfingers etc.
She's had lots of tests although not sure if tested for zinc. Been told gluten is okay for her ie not intolerant but that's not what you are saying. Would be worth a try as it's awful for her at the moment.

The only way to check for gluten intolerance is diet trial, there are no tests. I did that with my ds and the fungal fallout was quite horrendous, ie it got worse before it got better and he was zn deficient so it took ages.

He is gf, but adding zinc got rid of fungal infection permanently and better than any meds, as after meds the infections kept coming back. I swear by zinc now.

rainbowinthesky · 06/04/2012 18:24

How often was your ds getting fungal infections? Dd has been having problems for years now and we seem to be getting nowhere. Appointments with specialists are months apart.

He had them almost permanently for at least 2 years and no meds cleared it up, until we went gf and supplemented zinc. We were even told that he would have permanent scarring, but thankfully they were wrong as there is no scarring or discolouration at all.

Tonksforthememories · 06/04/2012 20:57

DD has got thrush and is also 8, how did you treat it? She's only ever had one lot of anti- b's, and is not diabetic, but i can't get a definite answer from anywhere! Dr is a 2 week wait atm. She's already on zinc for her nails and immune system.

Sorry for the hijack, just desperate for some kind of answer!

nightcat · 06/04/2012 21:06

another thing you could try is probiotics (orally)
We went gluten free first, then discovered that he couldn't shift fungal infections and was Zn deficient. After adding zinc it took a few more weeks, I think gf plays a good part too, but there is a strong link b/w zinc deficiency and susceptibility to fungal infections. Agree on zinc link with immune system too.

rainbowinthesky · 11/04/2012 16:27

Back to gp today and they said she is still very sore and given a prescription for another cream so this will be the third type of cream we're trying in attempt to shift it and it's school next week. Could it be anything else other than thrush as it isnt responding to creams?

OP posts:
Tonksforthememories · 11/04/2012 17:24

DD1 has a dr's appt tomorrow, but it's not the itching/soreness that's bothering her so much as the discharge. Creams won't sort that afaik.

Could your Dd have cystitis as well?

rainbowinthesky · 11/04/2012 17:34

No, she's been tested for UTI and it was fine and she's not going more often to the toilet or stinging anymore than you'd expect. She's been seen by 3 GPs now who all have said thrush. Just seen though they've given her the same cream she's had before for thrush so will need to go back to them tomorrow anyway.

Hi
This morning it's worse than ever. Sigh. Her urine also smelt very strongly as it did yesterday morning? What could this mean? Is it part of thrush? She was tested for an infection right at teh start of her symptoms and it was negative.
