What centile is her height in? It doesn't sound much too me....I remember my older dd being 3 stones at age 3 but could possibly have been taller....my DD is not overweight....des your DD look ok to you? Next to her peers?

Lots are still chubby at 4...

familyfun · 04/04/2012 21:36

dd is 4.9, 108cm tall, size 9 feet, 2st 7 and doesnt look skinny quite solid in fact.
they normally put on weight then shoot up so maybe due a growth spurt? Smile

DaisyAndConfused · 04/04/2012 22:02

Don't worry too much, just kep an eye on sweet food, drinks and snacks and do a lot of running around. It's easier to get into good eating and exercise habits young...

Mine, 4.5, 105 cm, 2 stone 7.

It hard to compare to others because abou a third will be overweight / obese.

Speak to your GP?

Thank you all! It's the NHS bmi calculator. It says she's on the 96th centile. She looks about the same as her friends but a bit chubby in the face! An dreading the school weight testing I know is coming soon Sad . Will watch the fiod intake and try to get her out running around more!!

You can opt out of the school weighing.

sunnyshine · 05/04/2012 07:56

Not sure on the height centile . Where can I find that out?

I'm just not sure they do the weighing privately enough!! Will see nearer the time! She may have shot up by then! I think they worry parents unnecessarily sometimes as people are saying maybe a growth spurt due!

Dd is around 3st (scales are a bit dodgy tbh) but in her red book, her height and weight put her as 75th centile.
I have no concerns. She is tall, size 9.5 feet, you can see her ribs and spine. She has a healthy appetite (yes she would eat chocolate til it came out of her ears if I let her!) But getting very good at eating healthy food now without being asked.

I think (and this is just my opinion) that there is so much panic set it about our kids being overweight that younger and younger kids are being 'targeted' when in reality the kids do tend to have a bit of puppy fat, especially before a growth spurt.

The amount of people I have met who give their kids skimmed milk, low fat yoghurt, low fat cheese and sugar free (chemical full) squash because they think they need to be careful about their children's weight.

I think there needs to be more basic info on kids nutrition. Also, if I remember correctly, BMI is not accurate for children under a certain age.

I has this last year with DD. She was 4, 102cm and over 19kg. All I did was switch her from full cream milk to semi (recommended from 2yrs now, I had no idea) and kept an eye on snacks without making a big issue of it. She was already pretty active so I just encouraged that - bike rides, scooting to school, races in the garden. She was weighed at school last term (completely confidentially - the school don't even see the results let alone other children) and is now a healthy weight and height. I think it's common for a bit of chubbiness around this age. As long as you keep an eye on it it should be fine Smile

My DD has just turned 5 and got weighed/measured at school just before Easter and is 114cm and 3 st 4 lb which puts her in the upper range of healthy bmi. We didnt get a letter just a slip of paper home with the numbers and that she passed sight and hearing test.

She wears an 11.5 shoe and doesn't look particularly skinny although you can see her ribs. She is slightly chunky of thigh she may get that from me Blush She is strong and healthy though and does lots of swimming and gymnastics.

sybilfaulty · 05/04/2012 08:23

My DD2 is a little dolly. I haven't weighed her but know from picking her up that she weighs less (at 5.1) than her wee brother (3.4)!

My DD1 had the weigh in at school and we were told she was off the scale obese. She isn't (and wasn't) although she was the wrong side of a growth phase and suddenly shot up after the weigh in. I subsequently told DD2 that the school weigh ins were for people who didn't have scales at home so she wasn't weighed when her turn came.

I wouldn't make a big thing of it - just keep a watching eye. Children need fat etc to grow so, as long as you are not worried and she is not eating sweets all day long, I would keep on as you are.

HTH

It does sound a bit much, tbh. DD is about 98cm and 18/19 kg and looks quite chubby.

Just cut down on sweets/crisps and fruit juice, I rememeber I dd that once and DD became more slender very quickly.

winnybella · 05/04/2012 08:35

Oh, good tip about milk, intravenous, I had no idea.

sunnyshine · 06/04/2012 21:45

Thank you all! I'm sure she's fine and you put my mind at rest and gave some good ideas Grin

DD 4 weighs 2st 4lbs and is a little dot! Very petite, size 8 feet, only just started wearing 3-4 clothes, but I don't think she weighs in light really?

My niece is 4 months older than her and weighs 3st 4lbs and she is noticeably bigger than DD, she has size 12 feet, age 5-6 clothes, but she's just a big girl, not fat!

I still give my daughter full fat milk, she loves it, I've got no intention of changing for the time being? She does eat like a bird though! Wink
