Tonsils and adenoids out - what to expect?

Dd is 3.5 and will be going in for her operation on the 19th. I have been told it is very urgent that she has it done and she has been massively bumped up the waiting list to a private hospital. (We were on waiting lists for an age before we actually got to see a Consultant)

We're moving house on 21st to a different PCT area.

Is she still going to be in hospital?

My daughter had this done at 3.9 and she stayed overnight only and that was because she has asthma so is a bit more risky children normally have it done in day surgery here. She was fine the next day and was eating and drinking normally and went home in the afternoon. Keeping on top of the pain relief is the main thing. We alternated calpol and neurofen every couple of hours even during the night. This seemed to keep her comfortable enough to get past the first few days which are the worst. Good luck and it's defiantly worth it! Grin

When my DD2 and DS had theirs done they were out the same day/following morning respectively - though this was 12 or so years ago.

DD3 is having hers done soon as well and I've been told that she will most likely be in for 24 hours max. She's a little bit younger than your DD, so I'd hope (for you) that you can expect similar.

Good luck with the op and the move..

Thank you. I've had no information at all. Only that is she bleeds after call 999, and that day 6 will be hell.

TBH, both my two were fine after a couple of days, sore, but fine. DD2 had tonsils, adenoid and grommets done all together too. Calpol and Junifen will be your friends Wink

So how much do you tell them about what is going to happen. DD is very trusting but gets frightened easily. I want to keep her trust by not lying to her but obviously she needs to cooperate and if she decides something isn't happening we're all stuffed!

Day 6 is when the scabs come off but if you keep up a regime of pain relief dead on time then it will be fine. If there are any probs at all during the op then they will keep them in overnight for observation.

I explained what was happening and why they were doing it and she would have a sore throat. They put her out with some gas thro a oxygen mask then they put in the cannula so she wasn't aware of any needles or discomfort. The aneasthetist read her a story while she was breathing in the mask which she loved.

Well my two that have had it done were a couple of years older at 5 and almost 6, so it was easier to be fairly blunt about it.

Certainly with DD2, the agony she had suffered every 4 or 5 weeks with tonsillitis was enough to almost excite her about having them whipped out. She had a straight cannula put in as she was very used to having bloods done on a regular basis, so that didn't bother her at all.

DS had gas through a mask, and emla cream, so the whole thing was pretty fine for him too.

I'm not wildly worried about how DD3 will be as she was recently in hospital with pneumonia and, frankly, after the shit they were putting in her arms/hands/masks etc, the tonsils/adenoid removal will be a walk in the park for her..!
