When to take DS (18mo) to the GP?

This is a PFB post! I know I'm being upright, so I'm posting for advice so I can try to relax.

DS had a cold all last week (or possibly hay fever) with a runny nose, intermittent cough and random inhaler use (mild chest wheeze).

Yesterday, this developed into a stroppy child with a temperature of 39.4 (in ear thermometer). Calprofen brought temp down and ice lollies were administered for liquid, coolth and vitamin C (orange juice lollies). Last night was restless and he only slept co-sleeping with me, but was very kicky and his temp was fluctuating.

Today, he has no energy (sits on me & watches CBeebies), still a temperature (Calpoled at 9.30 and temp now down to 38.7) and is generally grumpy. No rashes, but lack of appetite - he is still taking fluids (400ml of milk plus a small ice lolly so far) and his nappies are heavy.

But. Temperatures scare me witless. Seriously silly. Even though it's currently responding to drugs.

So, when would you take your DC to see the GP? How many days of temperature and what level of temperature before you'd make an appointment?
(Disclaimer: if I thought he was seriously ill, I'd be down the GP faster than a speeding bullet)

My instinct is currently telling me that he's okay, it's just a cold/viral thing; but my irrational PFB-ness wants me to have him checked for everything. (And as an aside, last cold he had I received conflicting advice from GP and NHS24 regarding alternating calpol/profen to bring down temperature)

personally, i would too be worried about the temp...BUT its responding to meds and although your DS is poorly, you are not running arround frantically with panic.

if the fever doesnt break by day three, i would be tempted to go to the GP. the new 111 (dont know if its available in your area) have been fantastic with us recently, put me at ease when my DS was poorly and then got a stiff neck Shock turned out to be simple neck strain from lying on the couch all day :o but they listened and reassured me i wasnt being an over anxious mum lol.

go with your gut instincts, us mums are usually right! xxxxx

I would take him to the GP just so they can check his ears and throat and rule out any infection. It's excellent if the temperature goes down after Calpol, but still it can be caused by an infection, which can be easily treated. Hopefully this won't be the case, but better safe than sorry. I hope your DS gets better soon .

Right. Decision made.

GP tomorrow if still temperatured up (so I don't hit the Thursday before Easter panic) or phone duty doc later today if he's over 40.

They're going to be sick of the sight of me (last cold his temperature wouldn't come down with either calpol/profen) with DS - who always perks up and runs riot in there Hmm This cold has lasted about two weeks so maybe an AB's job.

Fingers crossed he wakes in perfect health. But I doubt it. Sad

Thanks and Wine to all who've replied so far.
