Is there an alternative to 'orange' penicillin for 16mo?

hi, 16mo ds is in a bad way with throat infection and fever that's been hovering around 38.8 last night and today despite calpol. Doc prescribed the orange liquid penicillin but ds is refusing it - spits it out if I get even the teeniest bit in. Rang the doc just as they were closing to see of there was an alternative but was told to mix it with yoghurt. Did that and managed to get half if it in him but he's just not eating. Any thoughts? :(

there isn't really I think; we had clarithromycin a while back - but it is equally vile. The only upside is that it's fewer doses per day

Mix it with melted chocolate

ZimboMum · 02/04/2012 18:41

Thanks - will try chocolate although a chocolate button was refused this afternoon Shock

At this age I just lay them on the floor and straddled them with their arms down by their sides and syringed it in little by little down the side and back of mouth because they had to have it

DD gets tonsillitis regularly, we have a banana/lemon flavoured anti b, not a great flavour, but better than the orange mix we had on the last round. Your pharmacist should be able to give you an answer about different preperations, there must be choice, surely?

RhinestoneCowgirl · 02/04/2012 18:52

I did the same as TrinityRhino. Feels horrible, but they have to have the medicine.

threekidsfourcats · 02/04/2012 22:48

dd has had the lemon one and banana one, ask the chemist when you next have to have them they usually have a choice of flavours x

mumofthemonsters808 · 02/04/2012 22:57

I'm having the exact problem with the lemon one, he hates it,I literally force it down his throat whilst I hold a sweet in front of his eyes. This worked until he decided he would not have the sweet if it meant taking the nasty medicine !!!.Tried another tactic today which involved his sister pretending to take some it was then his turn and he obliged.Tomorrow could be a different story !!!.He dislikes it that much he points towards the Calpol when he sees the lemon bottle.

Thanks for your replies - have tried cajoling and forcing and both ways I get it spat back in my face. Rang the doc and buses said to mix it with yoghurt so that's what we're doing...Sofas so good!

I'm with Rhino on this one, they must have it. I would also use a syringe and not a spoon, and try to syringe it down the side of his mouth and not on his tongue, so he can't spit it out. It really sounds awful but what choice do you have really? Also, DS (13 months) has been getting better with medicine since both DH and I pretend to have some and say "yummy". We look like 2 idiots but it's working. :o
