Oh God, it's hip check time.

Lots of kind MNers have held my hand at this time over the last five years, and this time I am hoping against hope that this will be the last.

Dd's story (so far) has been one of the lucky ones. She was diagnosed with dislocated hips the day after she was born, was put into a Pavlik Harness at two weeks old, and successfully treated at 15 weeks old. All annual checks since then have been normal.

We were told that she would be checked every year until she was five, and she is five in May.

In theory this should be her last appointment, but she is 8 months late for it, due to a combination of starting school and my just being shit.

I hate hip check week. And I am shitting myself.

Appointment is Wednesday. Can I get a hand hold?

Why do you dread it - because of the possible results or because it's an unpleasant experience for DD?

JamInMyWellies · 03/04/2012 20:32

New this would be you. Big squish.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 03/04/2012 20:35

Also knew this would be you. Hi. Wink

Pinkjenny · 03/04/2012 20:39

I dread it because of a possible bad result, I dread it because deep down I think she will be fine and I'm terrified of being surprised by bad news. And whilst Alder Hey is a very lovely hospital, it'a a rather haunting experience.

I have been where you are and felt the same as check up date loomed.
She will be fine, it is stupidly rare for something to be wrong after all this time.

Pinkjenny · 03/04/2012 20:53

Thanks Heavensmells. It's very kind of you to share. Is your dd still being checked?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 03/04/2012 20:58

I was born with dislocated hips. I am 42 now. (i was breach too)

I love alder hey. My son was treated there for talipies. Dr Bruce is a consultant beyond compare.

Hope all goes well for you :)

Heavensmells · 03/04/2012 23:26

Yes she is still being checked. She is 10 now and checks are every 2 years.
Doc wanted to sign her off but I just wanted it kept an eye on whilst she is growing.
Her CHD wasn't picked up until she was nearly one so treatment was hard going but she is absolutely fine now and the only sign that there was ever a problem are the scars from her ops.

Pinkjenny · 04/04/2012 06:18

That's fantastic. We were so lucky that dd was diagnosed so early.

I have been awake for hours and had a hideous dream about it, in some respect I'm glad the day is here though!

I was going to send dh but now she's crying because she wants me to go. Fuck fuck fuck.

GoGoBananas · 04/04/2012 11:59

Just keep telling yourself you can do this for her. Model a strong, calm, capable woman. You can do this. Come on chicken, chin up, show A it's nothing to fear.

Pinkjenny · 04/04/2012 12:19

Ok. My Mum said the same, albeit in not as nice a manner!

They've gone. Rather embarrassingly, dh was not happy for me to take her as he didn't trust me to keep my cool. He bribed her with a lollipop and off they went. I can't even go out and distract myself because ds has chickenpox paces

Pinkjenny · 04/04/2012 15:27

All fine, she's been discharged.

Pinkjenny · 04/04/2012 17:13

Charleymouse · 04/04/2012 23:18

Woohoo!

startail · 05/04/2012 00:02

Brilliant newsGrin
I used to hold a little in her hip cast while her mum drank her toddler group coffee.

Other people's children usually cry for me she was a poppet.

She's the younger sister of a friend of DD2s and it's always lovely to see her running.

Pinkjenny · 05/04/2012 23:09

Thanks everyone. I will do as the ortho nurse requested on the phone and a) forget about it now and b) never have any more kids Wink
