hi, excuse typing have the poorly ds1 this relates to laying across me. he's been treated for asthma symptoms since he was 9 months old so you think I'd know all this (he's almost 4) but he's been unwell today and yesterday low grade fever, coughing. tonight he just can't stop coughing at all. had inhaler a lot today, with some effect but not for long. when should i be worried? i know what to do with a wheezy attack but what if he just can't stop coughing, and catch his breath? do i treat as asthma, very worried about him.

I would treat as asthma.

Have you made sure he is propped right up on his pillows?

How much ventolin has he had?

If your worried I would phone OOH or go to A and E to get him checked

You might want to think of hay fever induced asthma. Mine has come on in the last couple of days due to the tree pollen and I have been wheezing.

Some antihistamines may help. Try piriton as it works for my DS's asthma at this time of year with the inhaler as a back up.

Thanks. he's propped up next to me in my bed so i can keep an eye on him. he's had his inhaler in 2 puffs about 6 times today. he's settled a bit but am primed to head to ooh or a and e if need's be, both about 10 minutes away fortunately. did wonder about hayfever as I'm suffering but the mild temp makes me wonder if it's an infection. will see GP in morning either way.

if he needs more overnight I would increase the amount of ventiolin he has - you can have up to 10 puffs at once (but then you should head to A and E), I find when DS is bad he needs at least 5 to start to control things.

dribbleface · 01/04/2012 21:37

thank you, i will increase the amount, he was having 6 puff's at 5 months. it's just 2 seemed to help but then 10 minutes later he was off again, its so hard knowing what to do.

Dribble, your DS sounds like my DS1.

It turned out his was a chest infection and took two lots of ab's to clear it. He was poorly for a good month. Unfortunately for him he is in Yr10 at school and had exams so he couldn't really rest as much as I would have liked him to - apart from the half term wek in Feb and two days off school the previous week. He really was shocking.

Hope your DS gets better soon.
