Hypospadias - 10 year old son

Does anyone have a son of 10 or older with repaired hypospadias?
My DS is now 10 and as with most boys has become a bit self-conscious about his willy. Up till now he seems to accept that his willy needed an operation to help him wee properly, but I'm really worried that when he realises that his doesn't look quite like other boys', he will start to get a complex about it which will affect him in later life. If anyone has a DS or even a DH (if they don't mind you talking about them!) with hypospadias I'd be really grateful for your feedback.

Have bumped this - as I put it in Children's Health which doesn't seem to get as much traffic as Chat or AIBU, so hope someone sees it...

No advise as Ds is younger than yours but does it look much different? Ds is only 2 but since his repair he looks pretty 'normal'

I would be ready to show him that there is suh a wide range of 'normal' that it shouldn't be an issue iyswim?

Thanks Sirzy - when I say different, he has no foreskin and the edge of his willy looks a little bit 'ragged' where they've reformed the opening and stitched everything back together. Sorry to be so graphic, but that's the only way I can describe it Blush!

The majority of boys who have hypospadius repairs have to be circumcised because they usually use the foreskin tissue to make the urinary tract repair and reposition the meatus (pee hole). Also accompanying this birth condition, the foreskin is often not properly formed and the glans is partly exposed anyway.

The hypospadius repair is not usually very visible as it is on the underside as the penis hangs down. The surgeon's objective therefore is to make the penis look just like it has had a regular circumcision. This happens anyway to thousands of boys in the UK for other medical reasons (often posted here) or as a mark of family, cultural or religious tradition.

Your son should have no more difficulty than these boys when using a school or public changing room or having his willy accidentally seen by peers. I would explain about circumcision to your son and major on the fact that he has been, making light of the hypospadius repair. Mention the history, prevalence and benefits of circumcision to your son. Reassure him that although he is in a minority it a very sizeable one; A third of the worldwide male population is circumcised. Statistically in the UK there should be two or three circumcised boys in every school class but of course it doesn't work out evenly.

Savannahgirl, don't lose sleep over this. My boys are circumcised and I have no regrets. I shall explain it as above when they ask questions or an opportunity arises. PM me if you want more info.

I've been looking into this because my DS also has hypospadias - there are some views here from men who were born with it.
