Moving to Sub Saharan East Africa with a 9 month old baby

Hello there - first posting so I'd be grateful for your patience. I have a 4 month old baby son, Noun. My husband has been offered a job in East Africa which starts when Noun is 9 months old. The job package would mean that I could take the next 5 years off work and care for Noun full time which I'd love to do. However the employer has recommended that we have jabs for Hep A & B, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Cholera, Meningitis plus precautions against malaria. My son is currently too young for the jabs, some are given at a year, some at 2 years. My GP has tried and failed to provide any advice as he hasn't encountered this before. Does anyone have any experience of travel to this region that they could share with me please?

Try reposting in living overseas as more likely to find someone who's done similar.

However, looking at your list, he's not too young for all of them- can give some typhoid vaccs at 6mo and they will do yellow fever at 6mo if there's a high risk of contracting it. Perhaps it's just that the NHS won't do them now but they can theoretically be given (eg in HK, children get Hep B at birth and then 2 boosters). Try contacting a specialist travel clinic/ yellow fever centre and asking them

I had a friend who did this cos her DH worked for the foreign office. Perhaps their website might have some links? There is a school of tropical medicine (liverpool I think) who would know more detail about jabs etc. YOur doc could/should ask them?

Thanks both of you, I'm off to the travel clinic next week. I think I got a bit freaked out after speaking to the GP who couldn't give me any information about about the baby's requirements at all. He did say he'd speak to the Liverpool school & get back to me. I'm off to post in living overseas!
