3 yr old 'bringing' up food/vomiting in mouth - several times a day - what IS this?

3 yr old DD. This is a recent thing, in the last month or so. After she's eaten, but it can be whenever, she sort of sicks in her own mouth a bit, and then chews on it. Yuck. When I ask her to show me it's like almost solid, undigested food....but she never had colic or reflux or anything.

Did take her to the docs a week ago. He was useless and just said her tonsils were quite big but the rest of her should 'catch up' eventually...

Is it a case of getting her to chew more? Could she be developing an intolerance to something? She really doesn't eat many carbs and adores diary - cheese, yogurt etc...have only recently stoped BF.

Any ideas/thoughts - most welcome since it's really not very pleasant. It's up to at least 6-12 times a day...

It could be a behavioural thing (children can be odd) but I'd want to definitely rule out anything physical. Could you take her to a different Dr?

AngelsWithSilverWings · 29/03/2012 12:26

Watching this with interest! My DD age 3 does this too.

But she never has a problem with cake or chocolate biscuits or fruit so I'm just assuming that she is doing it as a way of getting out of eating her dinner. ( she also feigns tiredness at mealtimes)

The panic on her face when it happens is so real though - its like she thinks she will choke if she swallows the food . It's hard to know if there is another reason for it .

I would want to rule out anything, too...neurological things can present with this sort of symptom I think. (don't quote me on that)

But it is probably just a habit. Can you see another doc?

Pagwatch · 29/03/2012 13:14

My son does this. It is a behavioural problem

You need to sort it out. See a Doctor to rule out a physical problem but then get a referral to a behavioural therapist if nothing medical shows up.

It is a real issue. It will rot their teeth really quickly and pulling gut acids up through the throat regularly is bad too.

My son has asd but this is a stand alone behaviour so does not mean it is a symptom of anything Asd related iyswim.

We have pretty much stopped DS 2 doing it. It is really rare now. But he had to have 6 teeth removed.

GoblersKnob · 29/03/2012 13:20

My 7yo ds has been doing this for the last 6 weeks or so, have seen the dr three times, he says it is a virusHmm

Pagwatch, do you think it could be behavioural bought on by stress? Am baffled by it and not sure what to do.

GoblersKnob · 29/03/2012 13:22

Oh and ds doesn't chew on it he just says he is 'sick in his mouth'. He is finding it quite distressing and clearly doesn't like it.

Pagwatch · 29/03/2012 13:24

It's really difficult to say to be honest, which is no help is it?

Ds2 has high anxiety levels. He has food intolerances. He used to do it because he lined it and be had to. He can regurgitate when ever he wants to and will still do it sometimes.
For him it was definitely behavioural.

Pagwatch · 29/03/2012 13:26

Goblers, if he doesn't like it, it sounds more like a reflux thing - a medical issue. So your Dr may be right.

My step son used to do this and it was his tonsils that were the problem, he had them out when he was 7 and is now fine. Now i'm going through a similar thing with dd2 (6), i took her to out of hours gp at the weekend and was told her tonsils were huge and she had strep throat but took her to my gp a few days later and he said her tonsils are fine (just big) but she has been gagging and bringing food up in her mouth Sad.
