When to call dr?

DS2 (21 months) vomited a number of times yesterday evening. He already had a snotty nose/cough for a couple of days and had just started to run a temperature.

He was last sick at around midnight. However, he literally hasn't moved all day :( he has been in my bed and sleeping mostly. He has managed periods of being awake but only an hour or so before crashing out for an hour or two.

He hasnt eaten except for one biscuit, he has had water but not loads. I feel confident he isn't dehydrated though. He refused boob all day but had a good feed earlier this evening.

He had an explosive nappy an hour or so ago. His temp hasn't gone below 38.4 all day despite regular calpol. Haven't given ibuprofen as scared of upsetting his tummy further also been told before never to give it if there's a risk of dehydration.

He is so lethargic, he hasn't uttered a word all day, hasn't walked, just looks at me as if to say 'what is wrong with me?' :(

Will dr just say it's a stomach bug and therefore nothing they can do? I'm going to ring them
In the morning if no better but just wondering if I should call OOH tonight? He's sleeping fitfully at the moment although I think he may vomit soon as he was like this last night.

I would def call OOH tonight. You are clearly concerned, and he sounds quite poorly.

dikkertjedap · 28/03/2012 22:57

Better safe than sorry, yes, call OOH.

I would def call now. Not to worry you but when my 4 yo ds was like that about two months ago (lethargic, just sleeping all the time) with a cough/cold thing the gp packed him straight off to A and E at the childrens hospital. He ended up admitted for four days with respiratory infection.

Gp actually rang a few days later to see how I'd got on and said it wasn't the temp or cough that had made him send him to hospital but the fact he could hardly keep his eyes open to even be examined and was quite floppy and unresponsive. As he said better safe than sorry.

It probably is nothing, just your ds's body trying to recover by 'sleeping it off' but if you are worried there is no point in sitting on it. I was so glad I got an emergency appointment when I did. Hope your ds is ok.

Yes call gp now. Also if he has been vomiting , there is a chance he is dehydrated. Quiet is quite worrying.

How's ds now op? X

Sorry not had chance for an update.

Called OOH last night, dr said that as DS was settled and sleeping then not to disturb him by dragging him out (nearest surgery is 10 miles away) and to reassess in the morning. Said it sounds like Rotavirus, nothing they can do unless he becomes dehydrated and I need to keep his fluids up.

DS woke with another explosive nappy this morning, I'm trying to push water into him but he is very reluctant. He's been sleeping on and off all morning, DH is popping back from work in a minute with some diaoralyte and if I can't get any of that into him then I will call dr.

I'm concerned as his lips are already dry, he is slightly more alert than he was yesterday and temp not as high so I'm thinking there is a little improvement. Refusing to breastfeed so can't even get fluids into him that way.

Reading up on rotavirus online it appears to be particularly nasty and symptoms can last up to 2 weeks! I've got 3 other children so we're in for an interesting Easter holdidays if they all succumb one by one Confused

Thanks for all the advice, I'm keeping a very close eye on him and won't hesitate to get help if needed.

Just to say my little boy (16 months) had rotavirus last week...we ended up at hospital for a day on the assessment unit.

He literally didn't do anything apart from have sips of drink and sleep for 5 days. He perked up a bit on the 6 day and by monday which was when it all started he was pretty much back to normal.

I actually posted about it last week as I was so worried...even when he'd been really poorly before he was never like that.
