DS1 (5) shivering/sweating at night but no fever

DS1 (5) has always seemed to have problems regulating his temperature at night - he wraps himself right up in his duvet and overheats, or flings it right off and gets cold. Just now, and on a few other occasions lately, he's woken up completely disorientated and shivering, teeth chattering, his hair wet with sweat but no actual fever. When it happened just now we gave him calpol and a drink and got him back into bed. He'd lie down and seem ok and then suddenly start up, shouting - this happened quite a few times before he eventually settled down again.

The first time this happened was when he had chicken pox but he's done it a few times since. Lately, he's also taken to sleeping with a huge number of cuddly toys in the bed and they seem to be overheating him.

Does this sound like anything to worry about? Is calpol a good idea if he doesn't actually have a temperature? Apart from banning the excess bears, is there anything we can do to prevent it?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Bump...

Really sorry. Don't have anything really to advise but wanted to bump for you!

If he doesn't actually have a temp, then I guess it's nothing to worry about ...
dd used to get very hot and wet through the hair when she was younger (and a bit plumper!) but has grown out of it now

...I just don't think dc regulate their temps as well as adults. Perhap have window open, lighter duvet, pure cotton pjs, make sure well hydrated and wait for him to grow out of it???? Don't know really - sorry reply pretty obvious/not much help - but you can always take him to doctors if you are worried (perhaps he is fighting low level bug atm???)

Hope problem resolves itself soon anyway!

Could it be night terrors

BlueEyeshadow · 28/03/2012 16:19

Thanks SC and left. I've just looked up night terrors and it's possible, although he doesn't seem scared exactly. He already has a very light duvet, but might try opening the window a bit, and will definitely reduce the number of cuddly toys!!

Hopefully it will turn out to be just 'one of those things' that he grows out of. Hope it improves anyway x
