Nappy rash or chicken pox?

DS 22m has had some red spots in his bum for a few days and we though it was nappy rash as he's teething. Tonight they are looking biggers and quite sore, theres probably about 8 or 9 in his bum crack (sorry tmi), then also has 4 or 5 similar looking spots onhis face under his bottom lip, then probably 6 or 7 other similar spots at various places on the rest of his body. The spots are red but they don't look like they have anything in them

He doesn't seem unwell although last night he was very unsettled and didn't sleep between 1 or 4.45. Has been more or less ok today just seemed abit tired (as expected). He's eating ok. Mum had him yesterday and had a strange incident where he started crying for no reason (he rarely crys) and then kept looking at his hands, then he clenched them up really tight and wouldn't let her look at them.. At night he looked at his hands a few times and whimpered abit but he let me look at them and they looked ok

When mine had chicken pox the spots were very distinctive, they looked like blisters.

What you are describing sounds like maybe a viral rash. He does sound like he is unwell but I think you would know if it was chicken pox.

When you mentioned about hands, I was wondering if it could be foot and mouth disease? You get small red spots (these can also look like tiny blisters) on hands and feet and sometimes nappy area. Also can get mouth ulcers and spots around mouth too. This is a very common and very contagious childhood illness.

I guess by tomorrow you'll know anyhow as the chicken pox spreads rapidly. Hope he feels better soon.

hmm i thought of that to but he doesn't have any on his feet and hands- do they always get them there?, however mum mentioned he has also been pulling at his tongue today and yesterday like he had something in his mouth- he will never let us look in his mouth long enough to see anything though

I thought it sounded like hand foot and mouth as well... When my DD had it, it started off with what looked like nappy rash.

I google-images-ed measles, chicken pox, hand-foot-and-mouth etc yesterday for a dear friend's little boy who was clearly coming down with something, the picture most like his spots was described as chicken-pox, and sure enough that's definitely what he's got, absolutely covered this morning! Hope your LO is okay.

One of my children got hand foot and mouth once (at same age as your son) but only had spots in his mouth. One or two on hands/feet appeared a few days later but we first noticed because he was in a lot of pain with his mouth.

It ended up actually being the reason he stopped having a dummy too as he wouldn't even put that in his mouth. It was horrible for him though. So if you can get a look in his mouth that would be a good place to start. Same child also got chicken pox in his mouth too really badly.

just googled and looked on wikipedia, there is a photo of an 11 month old boy's mouth and it looks exactly the same as my DS so guess he must have this, maybe his hands have been hurting as well although there are no spots on them.

From what i can see i don't need to visit GP unless he gets alot worse so i'll just keep an eye on him, is this correct?

Yes, no need to go to doctors as there is nothing they can do. I just gave calpol etc to help with the pain, plus ice lollies, cool yogurt etc to eat. Poor thing. It only last 1-2 days though.

update- DS had a rough nite, bed at 8, awake at 10, back to sleep at 12.30, awake at 1.15, back to sleep 1.45, awake at 2.15, not back to sleep till 4.15, he was just crying and crying and wouldn't settle, think the tiredness was making things worse. Anyway i decided there was no harm in taking him to the docs to be on the safe side and the doc said he has impedigo and has given us some cream plus he is also teething his back molars so the two things are doubly unsettling him.
