Help - DD never been like this - worried

DD is 1yo. She's had spots in her mouth for a few days, generally fine in herself but cries when eating and a bit clingy. went to gps this morning and of course she was fine in herself. gp ruled out thrush and just guessed it was 'a virus'. I thought it may be reaction to her mmr a couple of weeks ago - the ?koplic? spots?

since we came back from gp i gave her nurofen and she's gone into an awful screaming fit - won't let me hold her, won't sit still. just screams rolling around the floor inconsolably. I've given her 2 bfs in the past half hour as it's been the only thing to temporarily soothe her, but i have to leave to go to work in half an hour and dh take over. i feel awful at leaving her as obv dh can't bf!

does this sound ike mmr reaction? she will be ok without me won't she? [sob pfb]

Doesn't sound like mmr reaction. Could it be hand, foot and mouth? Try looking it up on NHS direct.

Try calpol too - you can give this as west as ibuprofen.
Hope she is better soon

LittleMissGoodEnough · 27/03/2012 11:55

Yes, I was going to say calpol as well - throw all the medication you can at her!

Does she seem otherwise OK (apart from the screaming!)? No temperature, responsive, not drowsy etc etc? ie she's 'just' in some kind of pain, not A&E worthy?

reastie · 27/03/2012 11:57

she's still screaming looking like she has alot of pain Confused . Will google hand foot nd mouth but no rash anywhere but her mouth and she's had it since sat. Don't know if I can leave her like this Confused don't know what to do

sounds like herpetic stomatitis. My DD had it at age 2.8. Very painful spots in the mouth - it's basically a cold sore infection all over the mouth. Apparently it's very, very painful. She also had a bit of fever and was hallucinating at night. It was very scary until I knew what it was. And then it just went of its own accord. Came back briefly a week or so later iirc.

If it is that, be careful around newborns because the cold sore virus is v dangerous for newborns.

reastie · 27/03/2012 12:03

thanks marg. would the gp not be able to diagnose this when he saw her? he seemed clueless and even told me she was too young for bonjela too young my bum . she's quiet at the min only as she's feeding. looks like she may feed to sleep...

I didn't take my daughter to the GP so don't know if they can diagnose it. I would have thought they should be able to because I think it's not uncommon but sometimes they just say "virus" when they know exactly what virus it is (this is a virus) but because there's little that can be done, they don't bother to think any further about it.

My DD's got diagnosed at A&E because she'd been very, very unhappy with this pain and was like you describe (screaming and inconsolable) and she had been staying with my dad and he had to bring her home because she was so upset. Then she got hallucinations at night which were really alarming - shrieking, flailing around, not recognising us - and a paediatrician friend told me to go to A&E so we did. It ended up being an A&E paed who diagnosed it but didn't prescribe anything. I just needed to know what it was and it was important to find out that it could be dangerous for newborns because I was 9 months pg at the time so it did cause a bit of a problem for a couple of weeks, having to keep DD away from new brother.

The good news is, other than the newborn issue, it's not usually serious. The bad news is, it makes them very, very unhappy.

Ever since she had that illness (nearly 3 years ago now) she's been susceptible to night terrors when a bit under the weather - but now I know what they are I don't worry about them any more.

I don't know what to do with work. dh due any sec to take over, dd feeding madly from me and screams whener i try and latch her off - would ibu to not go to work or should i leave the boobless dh with her?

If you can get away with not going to work, then I would stay at home, I think as it seems bf is the only thing at the mo that soothes her.

LittleMissGoodEnough · 27/03/2012 12:30

How far away are you at work? You could go in, but come home if she won't settle with DH?

reastie · 27/03/2012 16:46

thanks guys. As soon as dd saw dh and played with his mobile she stopped crying! I wemt to work and she's fine now!!

It is possible to get hand foot and mouth in just one of those places. It is very painful.

Have you tried to give her ice cream/ice lollies?

GoitreGirl · 27/03/2012 17:04

Hi! Just to add, I thought that it could be the inital infection of the cold sore virus (also called Herpes Simplex 1). If it is, then its not dangerous in itself - unless you are around a newborn (and here's the important part) whose mother does not carry the cold sore virus herself, and the newborn was born at term.

I worried myself sick with my newborn DD when I thought I was getting a cold sore- I didn't get a cold sore and only later found out that the cold sore virus is not dangerous to babies if you carry the virus anyway (because they will have developed antibodies to it in the womb). It didn't stop me worrying but still.

Here is a website with loads of helpful info:

My ds had hand foot and mouth and just screamed and screamed as he couldn't suck his thumb.....had no other symptoms except blisters in mouth.

They are not interested in food at all as is so painful.....can't believe gp didn't mention the possibility of this.

reastie · 27/03/2012 18:36

Thanks, it's odd - DD has been normal all afternoon and has just eaten her dinner fine. DH said she actually ate MORE than usual with him today Shock . GP did mention hand foot and mouth but discounted it as she didn't have a rash on her feet or hands Hmm . I have no idea what is up with her - hopefully she just had a pain earlier (who knows what or where) and now it's gone. If she's like that again though I think I may end out in A&E with her - she looked awful bless her Sad
