How long can he keep it in for?

DS hasn't been for a poo for a week now. Am pulling my hair out, trying bribes and reading poo goes to poo land etc but he manages to hang on every time he gets the urge. He only gets the urge about once a day, about an hour after lunch. He's 2 and 8 months and still in nappies.
Drs suggest lactulose and bribes.
If you know anything about poo, why does he get so few urges in a day to go? Why doesn't it happen at night for example when he's relaxed or when he's watching telly? Surely his body must want to explode and somehow take over his ability to hold on.
This doesn't result from constipation but from an anal fissure several weeks ago. So the problem is in his head rather than in his body.

prunes hidden in his diet, prune juice? Sweetcorn - nobody could hold that in!

Hello there,

I hope your ds has been now but just in case... My ds is a lot younger at 14 months but has been suffering from severe constipation due to a psychological issue with pooing (he had constipation months ago and now 'holds it in' when he feels the need to go as he associates it with pain). The doc prescribed movicol for a month just so he couldn't stop it and got used to the feeling again. Also making sure it didn't hurt at the same time.
If your ds is still withholding poo then it might be an idea to get him checked again.
