again!

She seems to have caught my cold, not too worried about that, she has a cough and last night and today has been quite hot to touch which does worry me (have been giving calpol for the temp and it seems to have an effect on the temperature)

She's fallen asleep in her playpen, shes been asleep a lot this morning and when she is awake she just cries and generally just looks sad :( would it be worth a trip to the doctors tommorow morning just to ensure she is okay?

Sorry I know I sound massively silly shes my first child (nearly 9mo btw)

How high is her temp and is calpol definitely having an effect?

Is her breathing ok? She isnt sucking in under her ribs?

Is she drinking and eating? Is she 'with it' when she is awake?

OrangeCrushed · 25/03/2012 12:11

I am not sure as I've not got a thermometer but she did feel quite hot, so gave her calpol and she was in just her vest, checked on her then and she felt much cooler so put her baby grow back on. She had her normal milk this morning. Has had a bit of fruit puree,

She seems to be breathing normally, no sucking in ribs as far as I can tell.

I hope she wakes up soon as she is due for lunch.

Just felt her back and she feels warm but not as warm as she did earlier IYSWIM?

God I feel like such a crappy mum when I can't even tell how unwell my child is.

oh don't feel like a crappy mum. everytime my 9 year old has been ill I've been second guessing my decisions, it's because we love them so much.

If she responded to the calpol thats great, just let her sleep. Check for her chest movements, laboured breathing like suggested. Keep her hydrated and comfy.

x

Dont feel like a crap mum. Why not call NHS for advice if youre in the UK?

OrangeCrushed · 25/03/2012 13:26

Hi she woke up and i tried to give her some lunch, offered cauliflower cheese which she had a couple of spoonfuls then turned her nose up (but i put this down to the fact that shes not had it very often and I dont think she is keen on it) so made her some toast instead which she had a nibble at.

She's asleep now, im going to offer milk next time she wakes and if she doesnt take to that im going to phone nhs direct.

Hi again guys shes asleep again, its all she has really done all day im worried as she doesnt sleep this much normally, she had her milk earlier and drank pretty much the entire 8oz (left less than an oz). Should I just let her sleep it off, she feels normal temp to the touch not overly hot but not cold iyswim.

It sounds like it is just a cold, and while you're worried, it doesn't sound like anything untoward is going on. As long as she is drinking and producing wet nappies, don't worry too much about her eating just yet. If she's not in pain, stay off the calpol, recent research has proven that a raised temp will help her get better

OrangeCrushed · 25/03/2012 16:47

yeah earlier she all but refused her juice but accepted the milk fine. Just about to change her nappy so will see if shes wetting them, she been wetting them fine so far (and had a touch of poosplosions so im sure her bowels are fine)

Lots of liquids - can you give her some water in addition to her milk?

Also, get a thermometer as soon as you can, then you will know for sure what is happening with her temp and how the Calpol is working.

If she is feeling poorly then sleep is the best thing for her.

And to give yourself some reassurance, why not ring NHS Direct?

Oh and OP you are the exact opposite of a crappy mum!!

6692mumof3 · 25/03/2012 16:52

Dont forget if her temp doent come down with calpol you can give nurofen too. Imnotaslimjim i agree we shouldnt rush to pump in calpol but after having 2 ds's suffer convulsions because of a very high temp and spend few days in hosp i think it important to keep the temp under control just added not to freak anyone out but to be aware :)

MarksPA · 25/03/2012 19:16

Hi Orange,

You sound like a fab mum doing what fab mum's like us do - worry about our kids and ask for advice. Lots of sleep and lots of liquids are the way ahead, don't worry if she doesn't feel like eating yet.

I second 6692mumof3. dd2 had convulsions 2 weeks ago due to very high temp. Paramedic and doc all said calpol was exactly right thing to do when we noted high temp (middle of night, she woke us) after she had had a convulsion. Again, not to scare monger, but don't be put off giving right dose of calpol, take off the layers, and dab dc with cool wet flannel if you think your little one is running a high temp - best thing is to get temp down.

Watch out for ear infection (signs showed up today in our dd2) - they'll rub their little hand up by the infected ear and be upset. Doc said today, normal for bad colds to manifest into ear infection. Our little one now soundly sleeping after her antibiotics (for infection) and calpol (for another raised temp, as advised by doc) :( At least we know what the matter is and she's getting treatment.

Just keep an eye on her tonight and get some rest yourself - you deserve it too.
