My DD got it from her brother at 6 weeks, she was bf. You should be ok for your little one to catch it and it be gone before your holiday though.

Bunbaker · 25/03/2012 10:36

I'm afraid there is a distinct possibility he will. The incubation period is up to 3 weeks.

Sorry, not what you wanted to hear.

ragged · 25/03/2012 10:42

Yes, fully breastfed 3month old caught it off her 2yo brother. And I was definitely immune pre pregnancy (tested for it and all).
ime, 2 weeks from spots on child 1 to turn into CP on child 2. So agree your holiday should be ok.

If no more spots appear by tmw morn, do u think she can go to nursery tmw? She will miss Easter bonnet parade if she stays home. Not that I haw sorted out her bonnet, but feel v sad if she has to miss out...

fully breastfed ds got it at 6 months from sibling. No suffering at all though so the ideal time to catch it unlike if you had it at age 10.

insanityscratching · 25/03/2012 11:12

Dd got it at a fortnight old even though I was assured my immunity would cover her. She was absolutely fine, had a very mild dose but obviously gained immunity from that as she has never had them again.

Dd needs to be off nursery until all her spots have dried up that's usually a fortnight so I'd say no nursery now until after Easter.

titferbrains · 25/03/2012 12:10

Yes I thought so insanity. School said they could come 5 days after spots appear, but I think it was a mistake and they meant 5 days after spots STOP appearing.

if they have scabbed over then she can go back - I think dd was back to nursery after a week. They normally scab over 5-7 days after the spots start to appear. The Health Protection Agency says 5 days after onset of rash

titferbrains · 25/03/2012 14:47

seona thanks for this, I guess that means she can go - great news.

Breastfeeding doesnt protect against catching chicken pox, so that wont make a difference.

Its possible that your DS might have some degree of protection from you still, and even if not, it still isnt certain that he will catch it. My youngest child has never had it, despite the fact that my DD2 had it when my youngest was 2.

Nextweekmustbebetter · 25/03/2012 15:07

DD had chicken pox when DS was 12 weeks old and fully breastfed. He didn't get it so in our case I am sure that being BF protected him.

catsareevil · 25/03/2012 15:11

It doesn't protect because the immune proteins that you get from breastfeeding are not ones that will stop you getting CP.

purpleflower123 · 25/03/2012 15:11

12 week old DD2 has it now, along with DD1 they caught it from their brother. She is ebf, came out 10 days after DS's.

shelley72 · 25/03/2012 15:19

yes, DD got CP from her brother at aged 6 weeks, even though she was EBF and the HV told me it wasn't possible. She had it quite badly so i'm hoping thats it for her now..

titferbrains · 25/03/2012 15:35

Yes I didn't think bfing would have much impact, we will just have to wait it out and see.

my dd got it at 3 wks. she was bf. she only had 7 spots, 3 on her face and 4 on her tummy, and was warned that she might get it again, but there was a bout at school last term and she didn't.

wasabipeanut · 25/03/2012 15:42

My then 5 month old DD got cp precisely 14 days after her nearly 3 yo brother got the first spots. She was still exclusively bf'd and I had a good dose of the pox aged 10!

The upside is that hers just seemed to time out. She got about 15 spots - mainly around bottom area and that was it. No illness and a few dabs of breast milk on the spots dried them out nice & quickly. It helped that it was Summer so I could leave her without a nappy for short periods of time. I'm not convinced she's had a big enough dose to be properly immune but I hope I'm wrong.

DeWe · 25/03/2012 16:06

Dd1 had it mildly at 3.6yo and gave it to dd2 who had it badly at 6mo. She was ebf and I had had chicken pox only 5 years earlier.

titferbrains · 25/03/2012 18:54

well I hope this thread is useful for anyone else whose child gets it. I hate not knowing! I feel very lucky that it should be over before our trip tho.

DS got chicken pox when DD was 4 weeks old. Many people said she wouldn't get it due to being breastfed and me having had it. She got it at 6 weeks and wasn't ill although quite spotty.

I had it when I was 9 and my 2 year old sister didn't get it then - think she had it when she was 5.
