Squint/Lazy eye

My daughter has a convergent squint in both her eyes, her right eye being the worst effected. She was diagnosed at around 4 months old and since then we have been patching to try to improve the way her eyes work together. So far her eye sight seems fine and also fairly equal, although it is still quite difficult to measure as she is only 2 yrs 8 months old.

The problem is the older she get's the more difficult it is becoming to convince her to keep on the patch. I have tried so hard and we have good and bad times with the patch. My post is really to ask if anyone else who may have been through something similar has any ideas of games etc which may help to make patching time more valuable. I try close up work, colouring etc and building blocks that kind of thing but could just do with some ideas for variation really. I have googled this but can only find articles about video games being effective with patches and i'm not really ready to plonk her in front of her brothers playstation just yet lol! Any help or advice would be greatfully recieved, thanks!!

Hi Loobyloo,

Im an orthoptist, one of the horrible people that prescribe patching!!!

I have a thread going about squints and lazy eyes if you wanna join in...
My thread

Does she attend playroup etc. She could wear it there if she does? If her eyesight if fairly equal surely she will not be wearing the patch for long each day? If the squint is seen in both eyes then this is actually a good thing..... it suggest that she can see fairly equally with each eye.
As for other things to actually do during patch time...drawing and colouring are great for stimulating the eyes. And if she has specific stuff she only gets during "patch time" then it makes it much more exciting!!

Good luck Smile

Does she wear glasses too?

a mumsnetter made a lovely felt patch and has the instruction on her blog

would that help keep her interested in her patch.

Maybe not video games - but what about her favourite video?
