Sticky gunky eyes (4year old)

DS (4) has been out of sorts for a couple of days. Slight temp but nothing too worrying, eating, drinking, going to the toilet all fine. But he's been waking up crying the last three nights which is out of character for him and I've struggled to pinpoint what's wrong. Noticed today, gunky eyes in the corners and he's woke up tonight and they look really sore, weeping, crusty in areas, red, parts of the eye stuck etc.

What to do? I've cleaned them using warm water/cotton wool but is there an over the counter remedy? Or is it a trip to the GP? Asking becuse it'll be nigh on impossible to see the GP tomorrow, then it's the weekend etc

Thanks

You can get drops from the pharmacy.

Yes drops - ask for drops for bacterial conjunctivitis. I think they're by optrex. They're over the counter.

You can also clean with cooled boiled water which has a drop of baby shampoo in. Use pieces of cotton wool, but only use each piece once, to clear the gunk. Don't cross contaminate the eyes and wash hands thoroughly. It's really contagious! You're basically cleaning out the infection.

Ds had this a couple of weeks ago. With cleaning and the eye drops, it took a week to completely go.

you could ask for the gp to leave a prescription for you to pick up - its pretty clear cut with something like this - you are describing bacterial conjunctivitis - where i used to work they would write a prescription without having to be seen. you could try that?
or if you have pharmacy link - the chemist will give you the drops and the gp writes the rx retrospectively.
