chicken pox in nursery: any chance our dcs will not get it?

chicken pox going round nursery. think ds1 had it mildly a couple of years ago, so fingers crossed he'll be ok. but dd and ds2 both in the room with the pox. work will go spare if I have to take 7-10 days off, possibly twice in a row if they do their usual one after the other act. is there any point in me hoping they might not get it? does bf help? [desperate clutching of straws]

I think there's a 90% chance of catching it if you are in a room with someone who's infectious for 15 minutes. It's one of the most contagious things going.

MamaChocoholic · 22/03/2012 20:15

oh fuck. no hope at all then :(

It depends mamachocoholic - all my 3 ds have been to school when cp doing the rounds and never caught it ages -16 /13 & 4 i 've never had it either even though i played with friends who had itwhen i was younger some people never get it so hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones !!!!

5madthings · 22/03/2012 20:27

actually it has been doing the rounds at my pre-school and ds4 has been exposed numerous times and not got it, it took a few exposures for my elder kids to get it as well, so you may get lucky.

and yes ime bfeeding did help, none of mine got it until they stopped bfeeding, i had it badly as a child so perhaps they were getting my immunity?

MamaChocoholic · 22/03/2012 20:33

ooh, that sounds better :) I have a pox mark on my forehead, so should have immunity. we will not wean yet then!

there is a Vaccination you can have as long as they are 12months+. You need to pay as not routine on NHS. Both my DC had it.

ds2 was exposed to chicken pox doing the rounds in nursery no less than 3 times, and never got it.

MamaChocoholic · 22/03/2012 21:01

thanks for all these positive stories. I'm going to keep my hopes alive. and keep bf till they're 12

Yes, it is about 90 percent effective for preventing chickenpox if given within three days after exposure to the person who has chickenpox. After that time it may lesson the symptoms.

leftmysociallifeatthedoor · 23/03/2012 06:13

Ds was exposed to chickenpox dozens of times including one day spent sharing drinks, food, toys etc with a wee boy who came out in them that night.

He caught them last november and i have no idea at all where he got them from - no-one else in his class got them from him either.

Also, my brother, sister and i all had them at different times so didnt catch it from each other iyswim.

EdithWeston · 23/03/2012 06:26

It's really variable, so there is hope!

Chicken pox went round the DCs nursery once or twice every virus season. They never got it and I was beginning to wonder if they'd had a subclinical infection. Then eldest went to school, got it there and passed it to the others. Before that he must have been in nursery contact with the infection four or more times without getting it.

When dd was at pre-school there were several outbreaks but she didn't get chicken pox until she was 6 and at school.

notfarmingatthemo · 23/03/2012 10:14

Re breastfeeding my nanny boss was still feed one when the others got it she kept feeding her dc4 until what she thought was enough time after to stop him getting it he got it 14 days after she stopped feeding.
My dd1 was exposed loads of times including sharing drinks before she got it

Seeline · 23/03/2012 10:19

I know my DM used to send me and my DSis to friends to play if they had CP and we didn't catch it until we were 13 and 15 so there is hope. That said I would not advise having it when you are older - both of us had it badly. To this day (30 years on) I have never felt as ill as I did then - not even with pneumonia or whooping cough (when 5 months pg!!)

ElephantsAreMadeOfElements · 23/03/2012 10:27

DS spent about two years being repeatedly exposed at nursery. All his friends had it over that period, but he didn't get one single spot. Then he got it a couple of terms into Reception, but I have no idea from where as it wasn't going around at school and we didn't know anyone who had it in the couple of months before him.

Seeline, I'll see your whooping cough while 5 months pg and raise you whooping cough immediately after a c-section... Grin

ElephantsAreMadeOfElements · 23/03/2012 10:28

(DS was still bf when exposed at nursery, btw. Not sure if that's why he didn't get it)

MamaChocoholic · 23/03/2012 19:09

thanks for all the positive stories. I was starting to think we had a chance of getting away with it. then ds2 came home from nursery all dopey and with a temperature :( poor thing. I'm going to have to the next week off, I guess, and miss the retirement party for my boss and mentor for the last 13 years. gutted.

my breastmilk obviously isn't as strong as some of yours. not surprising as no way would I cope with whooping cough when pregnant or after a section!
