Possible Broken Finger Advice

dd (10) damaged little finger on non-writing hand with a ball last Monday. Diff to say if a break or not - bruised badly and she said it hurt.

We decided that, even if it was broken, all the hospital would be likely to do is strap it to the next finger.
We then put a small splint in, and strapped it to the next finger (replacing the bandaging) and kept it like that for next few days.

Seems to be healing nicely - managed her piano lesson today for example.

The PE coach (in whose out of school club the injury happened) said to her today that "she coudn't let her play until parents had taken her to the hospital and had it confrmed its no broken."

Is there any point in us taking her ?
Would they do any different from the strapping we did ?
Are we neglectful parents ?

Opinions please Smile

Sorry, I think you should have had her checked out when she first did it

Finger injuries are not always "minor" injuries, and how were you sure there was no tendon damage ?

have a look here

Wow - you can find a MNer who can link to just ANYTHING Grin. Thanks AF.
Don't apologise at all - I genuinely want to know what the consensus of opinion is.
Funnily enough, I had to take ds to hospital a few weeks ago as school thought he'd broken his thumb. A&E Dr said he had, then consultant hand specialist said no, it was tendons, and just to leave it and it would heal (which it has).

my ds2 did this to two fingers playing football, my mum is a nurse and she asked a few questions about if he could bend it etc and concluded that yes it was probably broken but no need for a&e we just strapped it up as you have done, he did see the gp a few days later for something else and they checked his finger and concluded we had done the right thing but that he should recomend we go to a&e normally.

we didnt let ds2 do pe for a fortnight? as i thought he may well knock it again.

as for neglectful, i dont think so, when ds3 hurt his foot, jumping out of sitting room windowsill we didnt take him to a&e (bank holiday wkend etc( three days later he was still limping, he is a bit of a drama queen tho! so we took him, turns out it WAS broken but just a minor fracture and they didnt cast it or anything just told us to rest it, which with a 3 yr old wanting to ride his scooter was fun!

I've broken my little finger 3 times and each time the bones had to be manipulated back into place (local anaesthetic to whole hand and finger pulled till bones back in alignment).

I'd always get suspected broken bones checked out in A&E, just in case.

I'm haunted by the only other time I took this dd to A&E, when she managed to shut her fingers in the car door when she was about 5, and, after waiting around in A&E for about 4 hours, we got into the cubicle, and she said "Which hand was it Mummy?" Oh the embarassment and feeling of having wasted their time! Blush and Grin

EMS23 - that sounds yuck!
