collected DS from nursery early as not at work (DD in 48 hour recovery from bug). They told me that had called my mobile and left a message to say that DS has bumped his head (why they did not call me at home, seeing as that is where i was i dont know but hey ho). There was a little bruise but nothing major. they had monitored it and said he seemed fine. And indeed to me he seemed fine. We had a joke about tripping over on way out as he and DD charged out of the nursery.

And then, 30 seconds later, he was behind me with DD, running to catch up again and I heard 'smack!' on the concrete floor (or tarmac I think it actually was). He screamed his head off, had v slight grazing on his hands and I thought the hands took the impact. Got to the car to find a large red grazey mark on his head, you know like floor indentation with white in the middle. He was pacified with balloon in the car and calmed down quickly. Did not knock himself out that I saw although i was facing the other way as her was behind I did turn instantly and he was looking up at me crying. So, I am pretty certain he was not knocked out.

I happened to be driving near to my GP so stopped in to see if he was free to just quickly look at I was/am not 10% sure if it is ok or not, you know sometimes you just know to go get it checked, this time not sure if I was just over reacting to due a bugger of a day already and second bump. GP not free and they said i could not wait there but he could call me some time later today.

Anyway. He is fine in himself It is quite ugly but it is not a bump really, t is more like a large red welt across his head. No drowsiness, vomiting or the usual worrying things to look out for. But I guess I am concerned by the sound he made as he hit the floor, and this being the second bump in one day.

Should I be more concerned because it was a loud smacking sound, or that it was a second bump? or is that not necessarily a big concern seeing as he seems ok and not v swollen.

he cried straight away, he calmed down easily and hasnt been sick or sleepy so he sounds ok to me. keep an eye on him as you wuld for any other head injury but it doesnt sound like he needs the drs to me.

it is awful when they do this,, my ds4 did similar just before xmas in the school playground (he was 3) and the crack of his head ont he floor made everyone turn around and come running and the LUMP was just awful, but he calmed down asap with a cuddle and some chocolate!

he obviously did get his hands down a bit, which will have helped, its always a worry when they bump their heads, just moniter him at home and any signs of sickness, drowsiness etc are alwasy worth getting them checked out :)

thanks 5. I feel calmer now. DD hit her head at school a few months ago and we had to take her to hosp as the bump was enormous and they were not entirely sure she had not been knocked out for a moment as no teacher saw. And she used no hands to break the fall! she was also absolutely fine, so technically you would think I would know! But, she was 5 when it happened so able to talk to us about how she felt etc, where DS is only 2.

He had a sleep in the car when he got DH from work at 4pm, which is about normal for him if he has not napped in the car, and woke after 45 mins crabby as hell and has been since. Absolutely full on tantruming, hitting, wont cuddle, proper angry. but has eaten a peanut butter sarnie which shut him up for 5 mins so i think he has a headache hence the tantrum. I have given him calpol.

It has not come up in a huge huge lump, but does look sore. I will keep an eye.

if his behaviour is out of the ordinary i would get him checked out. hope all is ok.

I would give NHS direct a call. I always thought that a bump is actually a good thing and reassuring and after a hard fall not having a bump needs to be monitored closely. I would check with a doctor.

ok, he ate another peanut butter sarnie, made me put on Gotye Somebody a zillion times and was then calm again. I went out and DH was on duty and reports that he went to bed fine, took a little settling but nothing out of the ordinary when he has a late nap, and I have checked on him several times and he is sleeping peacefully. I tickled his toes and he moved and grimbled. So he is fine.

Angry red mark look significantly better. But I will continue to monitor him. dikker that was in the back of my mind, about not having a bump. dont know why, maybe i read it somewhere once, but also, he hit it hard enough on his forehead that I expected a bump, and did not see one. Certainly compared to the redness and grazing there.

Had his mood not improved after songs and more sarnies, I would not have gone out, would have probably just gone to A&E. They have seperate childrens bit so would not have been a horrid wait.
