I was called after lunch to pick my dd (4) from school as she was coughing non stop and they were concerned. She is asthmatic and on a variety of medications (seretide, ventolin, singulair, and slo-phyllin) I was thinking on the way there she must be really bad maybe even had an attack. But when collected her I thought she seemed ok a little chesty but not to bad. I have been home with her now nearly 2 hrs and she is def coughing. She's asleep now as she seemed very tired when I picked her up. The school had given her 10 puffs of ventolin and suggested I took her to our g.p. But I'm not sure if it's required??

If in doubt, take her to the doctor. Better safe than sorry.

Take her. Better now than at 2am.

hattifattner · 20/03/2012 14:54

take her - if she us still coughing after 10 puffs, she needs to be seen - she should be clear for at least 4 hours after that lot.

weblette · 20/03/2012 14:55

What's the usual pattern to her attacks?

south345 · 20/03/2012 14:56

Take her now, I have really bad asthma and know how quickly a chest infection can set in. At least she can get the antibiotics in her system now if needed.

Jakeandsophiesmum · 20/03/2012 15:11

She rarely has attacks more chest infections that bring it on. She had an attack in September and before that she has had pneumonia three times and countless chest infections. She has also had copious amounts of pred in the last year for persistant wheezy episodes. She does feel quite warm even though my ear thermometer says 36.4. The only reason I feel reluctant to take her up the docs is I seem to have lived there recently with her and her brother, who had just spent a week in hospital with a virus that they thought may be meningitis one lumbar puncture later that was ruled out. Maybe I should speak to a doc on the phone?

all the more reason to take your child to the doc!!!!!
you might, while you are there ask for a refferal to get your child asthma under control.

10 pufs in one day is a sure sign of a problem.

asthma is not something to take lightly. go. to. the. doctors.

Jakeandsophiesmum · 20/03/2012 15:32

She had been under the paediatricians since she was 9 months they are working very hard to get her asthma under control she even had her large tonsils removed in April to improve the effect of her inhalers. She sees her consultant every 4 weeks and last saw him on Friday where he started her on slo-phyllin to try and stop her coughing. That's why I didn't want to rush up to the docs. I have phoned now and am waiting for doc to call me back.

With her history if you speak to the GP they'll probably just ask you to bring her in. Poor little thing :(

How is she today?
