Anyone know where i can find official info on when kids can go back after chicken pox?
My ds has about 30 spots all dried up and at the size of a pinhead now they are healing. Playschool said 2 weeks! but my dd will be next, we will be in same boat and then its half term! I'm stressing as I'm self employed, I cant work and my partner and i just split up and hasn't given me any money yet!
Ds is well in himself by the way, I wouldn't consider sending him in if he was poorly.

According to the Health Protection Agency children should be kept off school for five days from the onset of the rash.

Health Protection Agency says usually 5-6 days from start
NHS says the same
Once all spots are all dry and crusted and they are well in themselves. But - nurseries can set their own policies, they do not have to follow the NHS info.

I would ask them what their policy says and if it is wildly different ask them why. I would expect to send my child back as he is now.

I wonder if they are confusing the incubation period with the infectious time? Can take 10-21 days for spots to come out after exposure, around 2 weeks is very common.

But he won't be infectious now, so no reason to keep him off.

I think the nursery is being OTT but if they have certain rules, you've probably got to abide by those - or is that right? Maybe you could complain to Ofsted or something.

Sorry to be no use. I was wondering this myself as ds2 still looks rather unpleasant but officially, he ought to be back at school already (it's been 6 days). I don't feel comfortable sending him though while he is still so spotty.

And I still feel I should be applying cream etc even though the spots are healing. We had two weeks off when I was a kid.

Sorry you're in this situation, it doesn't sound as if your child is a potential health risk to anyone there.

Thanks I am taking him tomorrow and I'm taking a print off of info with me! I actually think they fancy a few lazy days, one child went back today who got them a day after mine, her mum is a teacher so I was thinking she must know.
His last spots stopped coming after 1 day he didn't have a bad time of it at all. hardly itched.
Jane i hope your little one is better soon i am so lucky we got off lightly, mind you dd will probably get it full force she always does!

My DS currently has chicken pox our nursery will have him back after five days provided all scabbed over. I feel your pain as I am self employed too and so far this week have mostly watched bob, Sam, and pat!

thankyou Smile not too bad here, well actually he was pretty poorly with high temps etc for a few days but now he is fine. Just waiting for ds1 to get it, as you say might be worse this time around! hope your dd isn't too bad with it x

Oh and good luck tomorrow!
