How long does it take for first teeth to appear?

My 5.5 month old DD has had classic teething symptoms on and off for about a month, but still no sign of any teeth. How long do they usually take to appear? Could I be mis-reading the signs? I really want to try and sort out her awful sleep but don't think it would be fair to throw something new at her if she is in pain... but I really need some sleep!

My son showed signs of teething from around 3.5 months, first teeth didn't appear til just about 6 months. Other children I know just popped them out without a whimper. Its different for everyone.

They are all so different but it is not unusual for them to be getting pains from them before they appear for a fair period of time. DD#1 and #2 got their first teeth around 7 months old and were moderate in their pain, but DD#3 was nearly 1yr old before her first tooth came through - but hardly noticed them when they did come.

DS had teething signs from 3 months and his first tooth came through at 6 months. Dd has no sign yet of anything and is 7 months tomorrow. They are all different Smile

Oh dear. Sounds like we are in for the long haul then. I guess I had better start the sleep training in spite of the teething then in case they take as your DS JustForMe??? What did you all do in terms of pain relief? I have been giving calpol and ibuprofen if I think she needs it, but don't want to keep drugging her indefinitely.

Some of the teething gels are helpful and nicer than keep using calpol/ibuprofen so much. Personally I'm not a big fan but there are lots of posters on here who have used teething powders too and been happy with them.

DD2 showed signs of teething from quite early on but didn't get her first tooth until she was 8 months old. 2nd one came around 6 weeks later. 3rd one (top front) has just started poking through this week at 13.5 months and the one next to it looks like it's coming too. Thankfully (so far) her teeth haven't given her any serious gyp and we've not needed any pain relief or seen her sleep become unsettled.

my babies all got their teeth quite late, but did have a bit of movement earlier so had a few teething symptoms then no teeth for a couple more months. teething powders were great for us to settle general grumpiness, I keep Calpol/ibuprofen for a high temperature.
we did sleep training and 7months and the HV who helped us said if baby is teething or ill just give Calpol and carry on with sleep training.

Thanks naturalbaby and everyone else for the advice. Such a bad night last night. Sleep training is going ahead regardless of teeth.
