Conjunctivitus-can it make you feel ill?

DD is 5 and came out of school yesterday with one gunky eye. It wasn't too bad (they didn't even mention it so must not have noticed)but got quickly worse even though I was washing it with boiled water and cotton wool. This morning it wasn't stuck together like I'd expected but does look a bit swollen and she is a bit tearful, she also has a bit of a cold and has been off her food a bit the last couple of days.

Am I right in thinking they don't give drops for this any more? Wondering whether to go to the doctors? She has medical issues which make infection harder to fight so I tend to be more cautious but am not sure if the feeling ill is even related?

Dd had conjunctivitis last week, it was very difficult to get rid of...like your dd she woke up with puffy red eyes the day after I noticed the gunk but they got progressively gunkier. The pharmacist gave me some drops but she fought with me when I tried to get them in so I went back and got given some ointment which you put under the eye which has worked well. She seemed a bit poorly and pharmacist said it will affect sinuses and she can be in pain with it so for a day j gave her some calpol until the eye puffiness came down, she also has a cough and sore throat and now so do I!

So yes they do give drops but definitely go to doctor if your dd has other medical issues to take into consideration.

Thanks will get her to the pharmacy this morning and see if drops help. It isn't as gunky as I expected today more red and puffy but watery, not sure if thats good or bad so dr may be in order too will see what pharmacist says.

She also has a cough and cold and I was unwell yesterday so maybe like your dd, a combination.

Did you have to keep her home for a while?am not sending dd to school today but she was due to start a new speech therapy group later after school but am guessing the drops don't work THAT quickly!

It looks very swollen on her eye lid actually, is that normal for conjunctivitus? Obviously I will get it checked out when the pharmacy opens at 9-and thats right by the drs but just wondering?

I kept her home for a couple of days and she slept quite a bit, her preschool specify that they aren't allowed back until 24 hours on the antibiotic drops. Once I got the ointment, as I think she was crying out any of the drops I managed to get in, it cleared up really quickly but not within a day. If you can keep her eyes clear and get some antibiotics in there and if she wants to go in then I wouldn't see a huge problem with it.

I don't know about the swollen eye lid, dd hasn't had that before it was more underneath this time but I'm sure the pharmacist will know straight away. Hope it goes well, post again!

Thanks will do, bit worried as it isn't even gunky today just really swollen all around esp the lid. She just refused breakfast AND found the choc brownies I had made and saved for her and she didn't demand to have one!

Wil see what the pharmacist thinks. I had a blocked tearduct as a child and iirc my grandma had it too and it can run in families, really hope dd hasn't got that too but I am probably over thinking it will get her checked out. Thanks!

How is your dd? What did the pharmacist say?

There is a bug going round here which is cold/cough/conjunctivitis all at once. Ds had it as did lots of his friends then he kindly gave it to me. We had those drops too and it cleared up really quickly

used2bthin · 20/03/2012 19:56

Hi thanks, dd is ok but still seems to feel a bit rough, took her to the docs in the end as it seemed to be swelling more and he gave her drops so have put the first lot in now, hopefully it will help. She does seem to have the cold etc at once and had very waxy ears apparently poor thing!

Will wash it with boiled water and pads too thank you. She looks dreadful but the doctor said she's fine for school tomorrow so am guessing/hoping that means the drops tend to work fast.

I felt ill with conjunctivitus. My whole eye throbbed and I felt fluey. It was a few years ago now but I remember it really clearly as I didn't realise conjunctivitus could make you feel poorly.

Hope your DD feels better soon.

used2bthin · 20/03/2012 20:06

Thanks jollybear that sounds how she is feeling, she asked to go to bed earlier which is unheard of!
