swollen thyroid in 3 year old

DD age 3 has a swollen thyroid..this was noticed by the health visitor 6 months ago...took her to doctor who took blood to test her thyroid function..came back fine..said he would recheck her thyroid function in 12 months(which would be this coming september)..was very worried so took her to another doctor for a second opinion and he agreed with first doctor and said he didnt think it was anything sinister or she would be ill and that she didnt need to be scanned...took her to doctor yesterday for something else and asked him to check if it was still swollen..he said it was and said he would send her for an ultrasound of the thyroid, but it might take a while for an appointment..asked him why it would be swollen all this time and he said it could be viral....obviously I am scared and imaging all things..refuse to google as that would drive me up the wall with worry..so if anyone knows anything about this or been through it with a child your advice would be so welcome..

Personally I would pay for a private referral in this case as thyroid problems can affect cognitive development, and it's gone on a bit. Can you find the money for that?

Boffinmum..unfornately no,if I did have the money there is no question I would go private..

OK, in that case, I would go to the most sympathetic GP I could find, and say this has gone on ages, and that you are so very worried you would appreciate it enormously if they could humour you, and do everything possible to get you an appointment with the kind of NHS consultant they would send their own children to, as soon as possible. Say the worry is beginning to keep you awake at night, and the thing (is it the beginnings of a goitre?) seems to be growing, and you really have a bad feeling about it. That should speed things up, I reckon.

Also I agree zero point in Googling as it could be no end of things, and you really need advice from an endocrinologist.

Thanks for advice boffinmum...looked up a goitre as you mentioned it,didnt read anything but sort terrible images of large lumps pertruding fom neck....my daughters neck looks normal to me and everyone else..it was the health visitor who thought her neck looked a bit padded/fat at the bottom but there is no sign of a lump pertruding..GP can only tell by feeling thyroid....as I said I didnt read anything as I would be a nervous wreck but I presume a goitre would grow...I will go back to discuss this maybe with the first GP I seen..though they do agree with each other and guessing they will probably tell me to wait for u/s before it goes any further especially as they tell me they are not worried....

Ultimately they are GPs, not specialists, and I would want my child seen by a specialist.
