Should I feed my DD?

DD is 14 months old and was sick about 2am this morning. We cleaned her up and popped her back to sleep and she slept through to around 6:30 when she woke for some milk then went back to sleep (in our bed)

She woke again about 8:30, kind of toyed with the idea of waking up properly and playing or maybe going back to sleep, then vomited again. Was fine immediately afterwards.

Offered her toast for breakfast around 9:30 which she refused, gave her some fruit which made her vomit slightly again so since then she has only had cooled, boiled water. She was full of beans this morning but she has slept most of the afternoon, just waking occasionally for more water.

If she's hungry when she wakes, should I feed her and what should I give her? She hasn't seemed to desire food yet today so tempted to leave it if she isn't interested.

You could offer her milk and maybe a plain biscuit. She will be fine though if she is having water and will let you know when she wants to eat.

Hope she recovers soon.

Well she scoffed a small bag of little organix biscuits when she woke so I think she's ok.

Cooking a little puff pastry pizza for her so we'll see how that goes down.

Thanks for the advice.

Thats good news Smile. My DD has been unwell too this week. She went from not keeping anything down to scoffing crisps, fudge and banana in less than two hours.

dikkertjedap · 17/03/2012 21:34

If she vomits again I would stick to bland foods for a day or two. Thinks like plain cracker, biscuit, little bit of rice, bit of plain toast and I would offer milk and water. If she is okay with the puff pastry pizza she will probably be over it, as puff pastry is quite fatty and not that easy to digest.

dikkertjedap · 17/03/2012 21:35

Sorry for typo - Things I meant to say.

gallicgirl · 17/03/2012 21:42

Thanks. She refused the pizza so we'll see how we go tomorrow. She hasn't vomited since early this morning and has taken milk and gone to bed just fine so I think she'll be ok.

I just wasn't sure which way to go with her being so young. I didn't want to starve her!

We've just had this, DD (16 months ) was sick several times thursday, didnt eat anything much yesterday but nursed/ drank water. She has eaten three reasonable meals today and kept it all down so fingers crossed shes over it. Hope your DD is better soon

gallicgirl · 17/03/2012 21:56

Cheers Mibby. Glad your LO is ok now. Maybe it's a bug doing the rounds?

was concerned I'd poisoned her!

I take it back. :(

Just vomited and had dirty nappy. Drank a beaker of water and had temperature of 39.6, although she had just woken so that would make it higher.

Mibby · 17/03/2012 22:34

:(

DD was about 24 hrs from first vomiting to last bad nappy

Hope you all get some sleep

Mibby · 17/03/2012 22:36

Didnt take a temp but was pretty warm all day thursday. Normal temp today

Fuzzywood · 17/03/2012 22:41

Hey Gallic sorry to hear DD is poorly. I'd keep offering water and something bland, she'll eat if she feels like it. As long as she's drinking she'll be fine.
Do keep an eye on her temp though and use Calpol and/ or Ibuprofen

Hope you don't have too horrible a night and she's well soon x

gallicgirl · 17/03/2012 22:41

She's sleeping lots so I'm sure she'll be ok. I'll just be sure to check her temp before I go to bed.

Window is open and she's down to vest and PJ trousers.

Blush sorry Gallic, I was sure you would be on the ball about her temp but I still have horrible flashbacks to DD's seizure and am a bit paranoid about high temps now.

gallicgirl · 17/03/2012 22:53

That happened to my niece and she stopped breathing - they got the air ambulance out and everything. I can't imagine how scared you must have been.

I didn't get chance to get calpol into her before she went to sleep again but I'll give it a go if she wakes up.

Does anyone know if ibuprofin also reduces temp?

OP posts:
MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 17/03/2012 22:57

yes ibuprofen is good for fever, but i would use paracetamol instead if on an empty stomach, ibuprofen is more irritating to the stomach.

cakeoholic · 17/03/2012 22:57

brufen is best at reducing a temp so do give it to her, you can give it as well as calpol. Hope she's on the mend soon

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 17/03/2012 23:00

39.6 is quite a high temperature...if you could get some calpol into her I would even if it means you need to wake her up.

Have you checked her for all the signs of meningitis etc to make sure you are happy to leave her to sleep it off at home?

Fuzzywood · 17/03/2012 23:02

Yes it does. You can use both if required I.e. Paracetemol and ibuprofen if you need to. When we've had to do that with DD we've started with Calpol then if temp up again within 4 hours used ibuprofen then more calpol 4 hours after first dose etc. Only needed if the temp doesn't respond to Calpol as well as it should. Providing it's just standard Ibuprofen suspension it doesn't contain paracetemol so it's fine to give alongside calpol.

gallicgirl · 17/03/2012 23:02

yep, she was sitting up and responsive when she was awake and no sensitivity to light or stiffness. I'll go check her temp again.

OP posts:
gallicgirl · 17/03/2012 23:06

38.9

I'll check her again in half an hour or so.

Fuzzywood · 17/03/2012 23:10

Off to bed, hope she and you get a good night. Good that she's cooling down.

gallicgirl · 17/03/2012 23:48

38.3 now and we got some medicine into her.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

How is she this morning?

gallicgirl · 18/03/2012 17:35

She was much better, thanks Mibby.

her temp spiked again before we went to bed so I stripped her down to her nappy but when I checked at 2 she was back down to 37.7 so I went to sleep much happier. She was much brighter when she got up and although she still hasn't eaten much, she seems much better. Mind you, probably just as well she's not eaten much as we're now getting it the other end!

Huge congratulations to Lidl's nappies for holding back the flood.
