4 year old DS diagnosed with asthma

My DS had RSV and pneumonia twice before he turned 2, so have sort of expected this might happen. He seems to get very sick with any mild virus with coughs that go in forever.

He has no known allegies so far, only triggers are colds etc.

I was with 3 ds's at check up so a bit rushed. He is now on a steroid inhaler and ventolin as needed. We were really rushed and have to go back in a month. I have a 'medication plan'.

Any tips or advice regarding general care plus questions I should ask when we go back?

I had asthma as a child very badly and DS is not suffering like I did, although I wasn't diagnosed for ages and had bad allergies. I didn't really hear a wheeze as such from DS although the dr heard it with stethoscope.

Where you shown how to use the inhaler and spacer properly? That is the biggest challenege really making sure the technique is correct so the inhalers are as effective as they can be.

Yes, but I had my 5 month old on my knee and little sleep and now I can't remember the key points. Maybe I can find a demo on YouTube?

Good question - thanks!

Asthma uk also have a good section on using the inhaler/spacer.

Does he go to school/nursery? If no you probably need to order and extra inhaler and spacer so one can be left there for him. I keep a spare his Ds bag and another lives at nursery.

Thanks beertricks - will check that out on computer, looks like it has some flash content that might demo spacers - but cant see on iPhone. Looks like a good resource.

Yes, he does go to daycare and starts kindergarten in September. It's been a challenge this winter as he's had so many viruses.

I will have to get another won't I? Until I do I will pack it with his lunch.
