Anyone else's DC with cold and/or flu right now?

Poor DD (3) has been suffering since Monday - started off with mild fever but was okay to go to preschool on Tuesday, eating fine then it all deteriorated from Wednesday - intermittent fevers (none yet over 39.5 thankfully), phelgmy cough that sometimes makes her vomit in bed, no appetite but says she's hungry, weak, lethargic, sofa bound all day today, runny nose. The usual.

She usually is a terrific sleeper but the broken sleep is affecting her ability to get better and she can't sleep during the day as she's woken up after a few minutes by hacking cough.

Haven't been to docs as I think it's just cold or flu. Am treating with Calpol, loads of fluids, rest, Vicks etc.

Anyone else's DC going through this?

My little boy is poorly at the moment with a cough and a cold and he doesnt seem to be able to shift it. I am using calcough for his cough, which is helping and nurofen, which IME works better for my little boy, but all kids are different (and teh syringe is much better than a spoon, it actually all goes in then!)

DD1 just (hopefully) getting over flu, Influenza-A (the Dr reckons). This is day 9 and she is still a bit of a wreck, although we managed 30 minutes at the park this afternoon. And she is suddenly a bottomless pit after barely eating for a week. At its worst her temp was over 40 and she didn't stand up unsupported for a whole day. Only problem is now she is feeling well enough to complain about how bad she feels!

Dr advised calpol and neurofen (alternate 2 hourly), so that sounds about right.

Yes my nine year old just had the entire week off school with it but is finally distinctly improving today (seven days all told, six with fever)

I work in a school and a lot of the kids have got this at the moment. They very generously shared their germs with me and I was totally wiped out with flu for about 10 days recently. I was not impressed, especially as I'd had the flu jab last October! The doctor said there is a particularly strange strain of flu doing the rounds at the moment and that the jab obviously didn't cover it. I feel sorry for all the children with this, as even as a grown adult I felt absolutely dreadful with it. Lots of fluids, rest and paracetamol and ibuprofen helped relieve the symptoms, but to be honest it was just a waiting game until my immune system fought it off. I had the cough for about two weeks after the flu symptoms had gone. Strangely (and luckily) DH and DS never got it.

My DS is fine, still coughing. He is gone to school.I got it from him.I felt terrible the first 2 days and still feel so.DH is very lucky.

UntamedShrew · 19/03/2012 11:53

My DTs were off for a full week with temperatures & coughs.

Weirdly they didn't lose their appetites..

My DH caught it and has been poorly for nine days. I e never known him take time off before he's a workaholic

I'm not sure if it is flu though as my parents caught it and they had a flu jab. They've been ill for 12 days now Sad

I am so bored of looking after sick people I almost want to catch or myself and take to my bed! Not really an option though.

This thread has put my mind at rest a bit. DD (3.5) woke around 11pm last night with a temp of around 39.5 and a bad cough/runny nose. She's remained high temp for a while now and am treating with calpol, must get nurofen in. DP is away and we also have a 14 week old DS so was cacking it a bit there (am not good with hospitals and was panicking that I need to get her to hospital but there is no rash or anything, just rosy cheeks that go clear when pressed with a glass).
I will treat with bedrest today and fluids and take her to docs tomorrow if no improvement.

Oh bugger. You are all making me feel doubly guilty for sending DD to school today. I picked her up at lunchtime on Thursday - "not herself" with snotty nose and a bit of a temp (nothing dramatic) - I personally thoufght she was malingering a bit until she came home and agreed to go to bed and went instantly to sleep.

She was home on Friday - full of snot, but no real temp, and fine to go to after school event - likewise Saturday, fine on Sunday apart from copious amounts of snot, OK and at school yesterday. She was a bit tearful and sorry for herself this morning, but I put that down to her brother winding her up. I did think about keeping her off, but by that time she was dressed and keen to go, so I took her in.

She's going to be off tomorrow when I have meetings to go to, isn't she [sigh]?
