Hi,

I would really appreciate some advice here. My 14 year old DD has never been what i'd call skinny but she's always been a reasonably healthy size. She has always played netball and hockey at school as isn't one to sit for ours in front of the TV.

In recent weeks however I've noticed she's really put on quite a bit of weight particularly on her tummy and hips despite the fact she's not exercising any less. She's developed quite a pot belly and a bit of a waddle. I've not wanted to bring the issue up in a bit way as in my opinion she's still too young to spend too much time agonising over her appearance.

She seems totally unconcerned about her weight or recent increase when I've tactfully questioned her so I'm tempted not to say anything at all. On the other hand you would describe her now as 'overweight' which can't be healthy at all and hurts me as a mother. I've got a bit of a dilemma on my hands so I'm really looking for some advice on how to best handle the situation without hurting her feelings.

Suzy

With my younger children, they seem to grow outwards for a while and suddenly shoot upwards to compensate. Is that a possibility?

I would probably do a diet by stealth- have the whole family eat healthier and plan a active weekend together.

Thanks for this.

The problem is that we do already eat fairly healthily. I make sure everyone has their 5 a day, plus no-one else in the family has any issues around their weight. I'm starting to wonder whether she's eating lots of rubbish food outside the home?
