Five a day?

Does anyone know how much fruit/veg is classed as a 'portion'?

Are adults portions the same as kids, or is a kids portion less?

I remember reading somewhere once that a typical 'portion' is roughly the amount you (or a child) can hold in their hand. Anyone know if this is correct?

For example, DS (6) had about 5 grapes - would you say that counts as one of his five a day?

Thanks!

Yes I would.
DD probably eats five a month so I've had this conversation with her many times.

I would say it's the amount that covers the palm of their hand rather than what they can hold

But either way 5 grapes is fine

The World Health Organisation recommends we eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Most people don't come anywhere close. and the sad news are, 5 a day isn't enough at all!! In Germany they say at least 11, and in other countries different stories. Ideally, from a holistic medical point of view, we should take - and our kids- the 26 fruits, berries and vegetables available to assure a complete health and the re-generating of the anti-oxidants we need to fight off diseases.

I used to have a great chart that showed how much of each fruit/veg constituted a portion for different ages. As far as I remember, post toddler, it is 40g for a portion for a child and 80g for an adult.
