DD1 is 4 and has had a cough since Christmas. It's a dry cough, almost like a tickly irritating cough that 'catches' in her chest and makes her choke and cough. It gets worse in the evening and seems to become a deeper, choking cough.
She is at nursery (so is probably picking up lots of bugs!) and seems to have had the cold since Christmas too-some days are better than others but in general she is run down, tired and snuffly most days.
Had her at the GP last week as she was complaining of ear pain-doc confirmed no redness etc so just the usual Calpol etc if she has a temperature. Didn't mention the cough as it wasn't so bad last week.....!

So, the cough comes and goes-some days are worse than others and since the weekend it has been terrible again-to the point that she couldn't get to sleep tonight (went to bed at 7pm) and we could hear the awful hacking choking noises etc till well after 8.30pm, at which point we heard DD1 on the upstairs landing. She had coughed so much she had been sick everywhere and was really upset.

She'd is now all clean and is beside me in my bed, having managed to stop coughing long enough to fall asleep.
So, can anyone recommend how I broach this with the docs?

This isn't the first time she has coughed so much she has vomited (it happened a couple of times last year when she had a cough/cold) but I don't want to sound like a neurotic mother!

I do feel that this cough is now a regular occurrence as soon as she has the slightest sniffle, and it's really affecting her overall health / sleep etc.......
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give all info really!

Get her checked for asthma as it flares up at night

Would really take her back to GP, she might need antibiotics or an inhaler.
Dt2 has to have an inhaler when he has had a cold/cough was told its viral asthma.

Give them the info you've given here. If it's affecting her sleep and she's coughing to the point of vomiting the doctor should take your concerns seriously, you don't sound at all neurotic to me.

Wow thanks so much for the quick replies!

Am really grateful for your advice, will phone for an appointment tomorrow morning. Am a bit Sad that I haven't pushed the issue sooner, poor DD1.......

As an aside, had to get DH to help me clean her up tonight as I am eleven weeks pregnant with bad nausea at night so you can imagine how much I was breathing through my mouth......!Grin
