Virus Day 7 with DS age 4. Really worried.

Glands are up,
ears/throat/chest fine,
thrown up a couple of time,
two bouts of diarrohea, night sweats,
high temps on and off (go with medicine),
lethargic,
looks dreadful (pale, grey, bags under eyes),
v weepy,
covered head to toe in itchy rash,
drinking okish, eating a bit (just current buns or scones)

I have been to docs twice last week and they say just a virus. I am really worried about him. Can a virus last this long? I thought it was Scarlet Fever last week, but the Doctor said no (he was typically having the best hour of the whole week, and didnt look that bad), but equally the Doctor was quite dismissive and the first thing she said was that its a reportable disease and v rare. Do I just wait it out?

I have just had a look at his tongue and it is bright red?

I even took DH to appointment on Fri, which I never do as I was so worried.

Scarlet fever rash (not as rare as all that) looks like sandpaper. But I'd have thought it was very unlikely if the throat's fine, as that's one of the main symptoms.

I would go back to the Gp and ask for antibiotics given that it's 7 days. These will deal with a strep infection (scarlet fever). Make sure you get 10 days of penicillin, not just 5, like many Gps give. My DD had an atypical strep infection a few years back, discovered in the end by blood test - she never had a sore throat.

I have raed that you can have it without sore throat. and the streo b infection could be somewhere else? Like a skin infection.

Thanks all. I am taking him back later on.

I am just worried that they will not take me seriously.

Dd2 had scarlet fever a couple years ago, she had a sore throat but not too bad, she was sick twice, her temp was up and down, she had a rash which seemed to come and go and a purple tounge, i took her too the gp 4 times as was told 'just a virus', i then googled her symptoms and came up with scarlet fever, took her to out of hours and they agreed it was, she soon picked up after antibiotics.

Hope you get a more definite diagnosis / some help this time. I think it's always better to take them in again if you're worried, even the times they seem much better by the time you get there Blush

sunshineandshowers · 13/03/2012 13:07

Thanks all.

I went back and they agreed it was SF and gave me AB's. Although no swab taken? I thought it was a notifiable disease? They also only gave me 7 days of AB's. I said he needed 10 days (according to NHS website) and Doc said bring him back on day 7 and they can assess him. I was pleased last night, but on reflection this morning feel a bit fobbed off. I did ask, why no swab, will you tell anyone, he just shock his head and said no.

Anyway, DS seems a bit better in himself, has played and eaten a bit more. Still has itchy rash. BUT he looks truly dreadful. Grey/yellow/pale colour with big black circles round his eyes. Am still v worried.

He has also been quite naughty with his sister, which is a sign that things are looking up.

UPDATE:

We ended up in A&E on wed morning and were admitted and DS was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease. He has had the treatment and a heart scan and all appears fine. Utterly shell shocked. I never knew that it is really bad for a kid to have a fever for more than 5 days.

I am fuming with GP's (Docs). They could not have been more dismissive of my concerns. The GP I saw on Monday looked at my child, with his grey face, his bright red eyes and his swollen and peeling lips and said nothing of these symptoms.

I am confused a bit and need more info at the moment. Exhausted. Have got so much rushing through my head.

What a shock. But at least he will now get the care he needs. Unfortunately there are good GPs and as in all professions there are also many who are at best average if not below average. You are not alone and hopefully it has been caught in time. I would look for a new GP practice though. All the best.
