Pink, bumpy cheeks.

My 8yo DD woke up with bright pink cheeks and chin yesterday.
They are still pink today, her face looks slightly puffy and they are starting to come up with lots of teeny pinprick bumps. The pink bits are warm to touch and feel a bit 'stiff' (her word - I think it's probably due to the puffiness).
She is fine in herself, but I've kept her off school and given her a dose of Piriton.

I'm loathe to take her to the GP unless it will achieve something useful. I got a flea in my ear recently for taking her with molluscum (I'd never seen it before so didn't know what it was).

It could be Fifth Disease (but it's not spreading to her torso), or Contact Dermatitis (she is prone to eczema, but we've not been able to come up with anything new that might have triggered the rash). Or something else entirely.

Is there any reason to rush off to the doctor today - or do you think I'm OK leaving it another 24 hours and see what happens?

Bumping - because I could do with another PoV. DH is away with work.

Could be scarletina (mild version of scarlet fever) - if so it is highly contagious and needs anti-biotic treatment so you could do with knowing before you send her to school. Ages 6-10 are highest risk for this and some is going round near us at mo.

Hope that helps.

I don't know what 5th disease is so if I have basically duplicated that, sorry. :)

GinPalace · 12/03/2012 11:44

just checked - it is different!

That's interesting - I'd not thought of that. There's no rash anywhere on her body at the moment - just her face.

Strange because I think dd has this too. She had pink cheeks on Friday last week and I gave her a dose of piriton. It went but last night noticed the same sort of rash on her arms and legs. I've never heard of 5th disease before but I have just checked and it seems exactly what she has.

I know it's not scarlet fever as she had that last summer and it was completely different to this. Thank you for the thread op as I now know what she has.

Glad to help Grin, I hope your DD is better soon.
