What can I do? Poor old dd, it seems to have flared up suddenly; she's only just told me. She's 12 btw.

Poor DD Sad

Lots and lots of water - by the pint!

Hope she is ok. I have only had this once and I cried with every wee. Luckily I got some ab's straight away and the following day it was far less painful. Try and get an appt first thing tomorrow.

I think tonight is going to be a long night...

purpleroses · 11/03/2012 21:25

Tell her to pour a jug of cold water over herself when she needs to wee - used to help my DD. And get her to drink lots - fruit juice, water, tea - whatever she likes to drink.

HiggleDePiggledy · 11/03/2012 21:27

Hot water bottle or wheat pillow heated, plenty of water to drink with weak lemon barley if you have it ( some bicarb added) and a painkiller. Phone NHS24 if she is finding it insufferable or passing blood.

Poor dd, it is such a painful and miserable thing to get.

Lemon barley is supposed to be good if you have any of that? If not lots and lots of water

dearprudence · 11/03/2012 21:36

Bicarb dissolved in water does help, but it tastes truly revolting - if she can bear it, I'd encourage her to try and get it down. Plus loads of water, as others have said.

Jux · 11/03/2012 21:48

Thank you! She has downed half a glass of water and bicarbonate. I tasted it and it is revolting!! I think I may have overdone the bicarbonate though, so I've put more water in and told her the more she drinks, the more diluted it'll get. She also has a pint glass of plain water, a hot water bottle and painkillers.

There might be some lemon barley up in mum's kitchen (top of the house) but as mum died over 2 years ago, it's probably past it's best.

Jux, do you have a 24 hr walk in clinic near by?

Jux · 11/03/2012 22:27

No, we don't, BellaVita.

If she is in horrible pain or has a temp then I'd call NHS Direct. They've been great at sending me to the Emergency GO in the middle of the night when I've been suffering with it.

When I get cystitis it tends to go nasty VVV quickly. If your DD is the same it's worth talking to your Dr and seeing if they'll give you a prescription for some antibiotics to keep just in case. It made a real difference to me,

I feel for her, it's grim :(

BellaVita · 12/03/2012 18:46

Jux, how is DD today?

Jux · 13/03/2012 08:09

The bicarbonate made a massive difference so she had a better night on Sunday than she would have otherwise (she's had this before, but not for a few years). DH got up early and got cranberry juice, so she spent the day drinking it - we kept her off school.

She's back to school today. Just gone off in a v bad mood as I filled her water bottle with cranberry juice and insisted she have 2 days of that and no tea. Grin Poor thing, it is horrid, but she is much better. As long as she keeps up with the juice today she'll be fine.

Thank you all.
