Worth going to the gp with this?

Ds aged 5 has been off colour for nearly 3 weeks now. He's had the odd day off school in this time & he seems to perk up but then goes back to being unwell within a couple of days. He's got quite a bad cough, seems to always develop a temp towards end of the day & has totally lost his appetite. A couple of weeks back he was sick at school & oddly for the rest of the day ate like a horse before going back to having no appetite.

Is this just a virus & is there anything we can do aside from giving him Calpol & cough medicine? Mainly worried about the lack of appetite, he's hardly eating a thing.

Yes, get him checked out as 3 weeks is quite a long time to be unwell really so time to see the doctor.

Pancakeflipper · 11/03/2012 09:36

I agree - 3 weeks on, it's worth a check at the Dr. Could be something like a UTi, ear infection, tonsils, chest infection etc..... I know this flu'y type bug is taking about 2 months to shift but get him checked out.

Appetite wise, ready salted crisps are good for fats and carbs when you are ill. Would he tuck into some icecream? If his throat is sore perhaps mushy stuff?

Thanks for your answers. He's autistic and extremely fussy about what foods he eats which has just added to the problem. I'll try and get him booked in for Monday.

Will he take one of those kids tonics just to get vitamins in him whilst under the weather?

startail · 11/03/2012 09:53

I had chest infections as a teenager and as a student that let me function during the day and gave me a temp in the evening.
I hate Drs. I would put up with it for ages before being sensible. Take him to the GP.

Pancakeflipper - What are those kids tonics?

Bizarrely he's just said that his ear is beating like a drum. He's not in any pain, just thinks its funny more than anything else. He seems to be fine during the day but when it gets to 4/5 pm starts going downhill.

There are several - minidex and one beginning with A . Goodness knows if they do anything but lessens the mother-worry of "ooh they aren't getting in their vitamins and minerals."

I give my kids pro-biotics during Winter months but I have one kid with a poor immune system.

BabeRuthless · 11/03/2012 10:08

Pancakeflipper - That sounds really good. I've been looking for some kind of vitamin supplement for him anyway so I'll get some of that. You're right in that it might just be a placebo for mums but I'll take that Smile

3 weeks is quite a while so I would get him physically checked out at the gps.

BabeRuthless · 12/03/2012 16:21

Turns out its an ear infection. Course of antibiotics and no school for the rest of the week. Poor little guy Sad

Oh the poor guy, hope the anti-B's kick in soon and he feels happy again soon.

BabeRuthless · 12/03/2012 20:59

The antibiotics & the ibuprofen have kicked in pretty quick. Was a bit worried when we got home & his temperature spiked but it's gone down now. Hoping it gets knocked on the head now, it's horrible when they're ill.
