Hi there DS woke up and was sick during the night on Thirsday, he ran a temp Friday which I controlled with Calpol. Friday night temp was still high even though on calpol so I took him to drop in centre who eventually got it down with brufen. There was no obvious sign of infection so the dr said unexplained virus keep on calpol/brufen to control temp. So last 24 hours I have controlled temp with the meds, he has just woke up ( overdue calpol dose) with temp of 39. Is it normal to have this temp for 48 hours? Wwyd? Tia. Typing from phone with babe on knee so sorry for typos!

Mine had this but with a cold - any idea where the source of infection is? Might be worth getting him checked for urine infection. Ds ran temps at night for 5 nights Sad but is much better now.

Does the temp drop with the calpol or brufen?

RancerDoo · 11/03/2012 09:25

I think its pretty normal, yes. I would only really worry about it if the child wasnt drinking much or wasnt keeping drinks down. Has he been sick since thursday?

Hi there, thank you for replies. They checked for source of infection on Friday , urine, ears , throat, chest and nothing cane up. He hasn't been sick since Friday, temp is responding to meds but have to alternate calpol and brufen the calpol alone doesn't seem to do the trick. He has had an hour sleep this morning and actually seems bit brighter, he has picked at some strawberries and banana, he has been off solids but ok with water and milk. I think his sister must be a super duper virus carrier! She is at nursery but hasn't gone down with anything but DS seems to have had the brunt of it since Christmas. I've never had either with a temp for more than 24 hours, guess I've been lucky so far.

Glad to hear your son is better SS. Just realised the typo in title ! Obviously it meant to say running a temp!

2-3 days is average. After 3 days it should be settling, and if not looking to find the source is a good idea. That is why calpol and ibuprofen bottles say consult gp after 3 days....not because the child will be poisoned with meds after that time!

Thanks sneezecakes that is good to know! I can definitely see an improvement this afternoon, so that timescale would be about right. I'll keep me fingers crossed.
