Asthma in 2 year old.

My 2yr old son has just been prescribed a steroid inhaler due a persistent cough since Christmas. Its mainly at night but also throughout the day. Thing is, I'm not totally convinced it's asthma as no history of it in our family, he's not wheezy etc. The Doctor didn't listen to sons chest and he does have a cold at the mo. We've been told to use this inhaler for 2wks and if his cough goes then it definitely is asthma. If it doesn't then its not. Is this a normal diagnosis and is there any harm in using it if it's not asthma? Confuuused!!!

If your not happy then ask for a second opinion,

Some asthmatics only have problems when they are ill though so it could be asthma.

My ds had an inhaler prescribed last year (aged 3.5) for a persistent cough. His was the reliever inhaler rather than a steroid preventer though. He used it a few times, it seemed to ease the cough, so I was convinced he had asthma. However, I'm pleased to say that this wasa year ago now and he hasn't used it since or had any symptoms.

I think it's strange that they have prescribed a preventor but not reliever tbh. Also, we were told that asthma is very rarely diagnosed in children that young. Maybe take him back to a different doctor for a second opinion?
