Nasty Tummy Bug

Not sure if anyone else has undergone the pain and stresses of this bug but it's certainly doing it's rounds. Lot's of schools have been reduced to handful of child attendance and hospitals have been flooded with visits of the same kind! It's basically making children very poorly, off their food and high temps all round! I've been upto my eyes in it literally with my 3 and I'm dreading catching it but I fear it may have started as I'm getting grumblings down below!!!

my ds is off school just now with diarrhoea. He was sick and had diarrhoea last week and was off school thursday and friday. Just as we though he was perking up he got a cough/cold and that made him sick too so he was off on monday this week. managed to get him back to school tuesday and wednesday but came home yesterday and said he had had runny poo at school and sure enough he had a few episodes of diarrhoea yesterday evening. He is now back off school again and not lielyl to be back now until monday if his poo doesnt get more solid. He is totally off his food and has barely eaten in a week. Luckily no-one else has succumbed (yet!)

Dc4 (yr1) said there were 9 off in her class of 29. We've have had a letter home from school about virulent stomach bug going round and if they complain of a tummy ache to keep them off. Dc4 said her tummy hurt yesterday as we were leaving the house....I told her that would be the 3 slices of toast and the melon she had just eaten for breakfast Grin

All well here so far. Hope your children feel better soon.

We're into day 4 with DD (14mo). She had to go into hospital on Tue night as she'd got so dehydrated. It's bloody horrible. She can't keep anything down but is drinking now at least.

Anyone got any experience of how long gastroentiritis can go on for?

I'm definitely living up to my nickname

we have some nasty bugs about at the mo in south northants, where r u from.

LakeFlyPie · 08/03/2012 23:02

Hope all your puking DC are better soon.

smellsofsick - DS2 (15mo) had it for 5 days last month, managed to keep him out of hospital with Dioralyte from day 3 (when he went to GP looking very dry).
I was advised that it can go on for 7-10 days, basically until their natural immunity kicks in. Although grim, as long as they stay hydrated they should be OK.
Suspect you'll have been advised about that after hospital visit, but thought I should mention it as DS2 tolerated it much better than water and it perked him up hugely.
Just a word of warning that he (and I've heard of a few others doing the same) was OK for a week and then had a mini relapse (much less vomitting, but horrible diarrhoea) for a further week.
Read a bit about it and seems they can get a temporary lactose intolerance after certain viral gastroenteritis bugs which would fit with his symptoms.
Hope your DD is better v soon Smile

I'm in Scotland! All last week my dd who's three was saying her bum wasn't well and she had a few days (apart from each other!) when shed have a runny bum, but was ok no high temp or sick and was doing fine up untill tonight!!! From ten o'clock she has been sick six times and it's stinking,, I'm gutting the place everytime she's sick so my ds does not get ill to,I'm nackered!! she wasn't to great but not bad last week with only a few days off school, but reading the other posts it seems to be the start of this tummy bug! She also had a cough last week, I'm so angry towards my dd nursery as to they are not telling any parents anything and I think it's due to the fact they are having a fund raise Angry she was ok going bk to school on Monday and know she's sick again and last week when she was off a few parents had said there is also mumps going around there too,, but they are not telling parents in case they keep there children off school. I think that's awfull, my son has his school play tomorrow and I'm the only one who can make it, and I'm probably going to be up all night know too Sad, I just hope I make it, Sad

Julezboo · 09/03/2012 05:45

We're in Sussex but same as your areas we've been told there are some nasty strains of it. She hates dioralyte but us much better this afternoon. Five days is about where we've got to

At the very least I've learnt that as soon as they're sick to start straight away with thise horrible sachets. Hopefully next time that will save us a trip to hospital.

Thanks for the warning too about the relapse. Will keep an eye out. Really hope all the poorly DCs are over their bugs too.

Lovefruitsandvegs · 09/03/2012 18:30

My older DS has recovered from vomiting and temperature but younger DS is currently going through it. It is March. How did they manage to catch it?

Anyway, I have read that when you have gastroenteritis it is good to drink warm water (previously boiled) with honey. Honey is very good to prevent dehydration. For salt it is good to eat crackers. Drink little but regularly. The same about food.

Never give ibuprofen as the child will get diarrhoea.

Seona1973 · 09/03/2012 18:34

I think my ds is finally over his bug and will be back to school on monday. He has started eating a bit more too. Still only him who has suffered in the house but it has gone round a lot of his class and his teacher was also off with it. In Scotland too.

Seona1973 · 09/03/2012 18:35

p,s, hand, foot and mouth is also apparently doing the rounds here!

Hi all
My DD (17mo) had the tummy bug on Sat and Sun and while it wasnt nice, it wasnt a massive amount. By Monday she kept sleeping and I knew something wasnt right. Ended up in hospital as she was dehydrated, really scary but she picked up fairly quickly thankfully. Now I'm terrified she will get poorly again. Hate it at any age but especially when they cant tell you. I was surprised how quick she dehydrated.
