Eczema in 3 yr old - she can't stop scratching.

My 3 yr old dd has eczema on the inside of her elbows and a small patch on her tum which she can't leave alone. We put on oilatum cream - which she hates - but she scratches it at night in her sleep.....sometimes to the point of bleeding. It's just not healing. Does anyone have any suggestions - particularly for night time?

a spoon of piriton just before bed helps with night time scratching, keep her nails short and long sleeve nighty with pj bottoms will give the least access for scratching

it may be worth trying a different emolient as different people find different ones work for them.

if the skin is broken you may need a few days of hydrocortisone cream

also you need probably 4 times the amount of cream then you think you do -I was shown at the dermatology unit and was Shock at how much they use but it made a huge difference

Thanks for that, will certainly try more cream - although dd is obsessed that the cream will go on her top!
Fingers crossed.

cream does that Grin

hope you manage to get it sorted for her, my DD usuallly starts to get better in summer as the sunshine does wonders for her skin but I know this is unusual

My daughter had the same problem. She is 4. I was looking on Google trying to find something that would help her night time scratching, after she started on her face! I bought her some scratch sleeves. That was just before new year & we have all slept soundly since. Within a few days her skin was healing & by a month her skin was near perfect :) my daughter loves them theyre like a belero cardigan. I hope your little one gets some relief soon. Hth

My daughter had horrendous excema all over and we tried hundreds of creams, diets, wet wrapping etc and finally tried these;

  • Elocon ointment (0.1% mometasone furoate) strongest
  • Eumovate ointment (clobetasone butyrate) medium
  • Elidel 10mg/g cream (pimecrolimus) face

It cleared up overnight and was totally miraculous! She has never itched again. Everyone is different but these might be worth a try. Smile

I find diprobase cream v good. it's worth remembering that if /when you manage to clear up the eczema it is still really important to put a small amount of cream on most likely areas regularly to help prevent it breaking out again.
