It has just appeared over the last week and I have made a doctor's appointment for next Monday to get it checked out but just wanted to see if anybody else had come across this or has any ideas what might be causing it.

Dd's left nipple (the areola) appears to be slightly enlarged and darker in colour. There is a hard lump under it when you press on it, a flat circular lump the size of the nipple area. Dd says its not sore at all and she can press at it without it hurting.

This makes me think that it can't be breast development because, apart from her being to young for that imo, when you do start to develop the lumps that appear are bloody tender.

I'm trying not to worry but anyone else's thoughts would be appreciated.

Anybody please?

sounds like normal development to me, everyone is different at 7 doesn't really seem to be that young to me

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 07/03/2012 19:41

Did she hurt it at all a few days ago or anything? Sometimes bruises get like lumps underneath them and maybe it's stopped hurting but the lump is still there. Or perhaps it's just a little fatty lump . Definately best to get it checked out though and sure it's nothing serious but I know your probably a little concerned. Hope she's ok op :)

MamaMimi · 07/03/2012 20:03

No Wheresmycaffienedrip , I did ask her if she had banged it or had been hit there but she says not.

I'll see what the doc says but I'm afraid they will dismiss it as development and it really doesn't seem like that to me.

In that situation would I ask for a second opinion?

If you have doubts then yes go fir a second opinion. You know her better than the doctor and sometimes it can take multiple visits to get to the bottom of something. Does it itch at all could it be an insect bite ? :)

DeWe · 07/03/2012 21:00

Sounds like it could be a breast bud. they feel sort of like a cylinder under the nipple, and can come and go, without being tender. But I would get it checked out if you're uncertain.

MamaMimi · 07/03/2012 21:41

It's not itchy no and isn't bothering dd at all but it was her that pointed it out just 'cos she felt the lump which was different to normal.

That's interesting DeWe, I wasn't really aware of breast buds that do that as I don't remember anything like that from my own development but maybe that's what it is. Would that explain the darker colour and enlargement of the areola also?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 07/03/2012 21:59

Hope you manage to find out what it is :)

DeWe · 07/03/2012 22:04

Don't know whether they can cause the darker colour, but apparently having them one side only is common. Dd1 did say it wasn't sore too.

workshy · 07/03/2012 22:11

the areola can darken yes and 7 is not too young (unfortunately)

my DDs came and went from this age, but her little sis is now 8 with no signs of anything

MamaMimi · 07/03/2012 22:21

I will keep an eye on it though to be sure.

Ooops missed out a message.

Thanks for your replies everybody.

I guess our doc will say what your friend said then DeWe, thankyou for sharing your experience of it, and you too workshy (great name btw, should be mine :o )

I had the exact same thing when I was around the same age, maybe a year or 2 older. I was so frightened, told my mum and said it felt like I had a grape under my nipple! Mum took me to the doctor and he just said it was my breast developing and that it was nothing to worry about.

Could be the same thing for your DD but I'd go to the doctor anyway just for peace of mind :)

MamaMimi · 07/03/2012 23:25

Thanks covermeup . I have been googling breast buds (!) but, yes, I do still intend to take dd to the doctors on Monday to see what they have to say.

I remember developing when I was at junior school but I think it was later than the stage dd is at (she's in Yr3). What I really remember though is how tender and painful it was particularly if I got bumped in that area at all. Dd's lump isn't tender at all. Maybe that's because it is early and it will come and go before the real deal, so to speak.

I think I'm finding it strange just because it's not how I experienced that development but I guess everyone goes through these changes in different ways, which is why I called on the experiences and thoughts of other MNrs who may have seen the same thing in themselves or their own dds.
