Ds (9) non blanching, purple rash on lower arms/wrists but he's not ill

TheOriginalNutcracker · 07/03/2012 17:27

Just noticed it, thought it was dirt at first. It's on the inside of his wrists but a bit higher up, and worse on left arm than right. Not bothering him at all.

He does have a cough, but nothing else.

I'm stumped. Have given him piriton incase it is some sort of reaction, but tbh it doesn't look like an allergic rash.

Have you googled to get a photo to compare it too?

TheOriginalNutcracker · 07/03/2012 17:30

Yes the only similarity was ITP disorder.

Have taken a pic myself, will see if i can upload it.

Has he been rough-playing at school? Ds and Dh do karate and sometimes have marks similar to this if they have been sparring. Perhaps someone has grabbed his forearms?

fabwoman · 07/03/2012 17:43

Does he have a temperature?

fabwoman · 07/03/2012 17:45

It doesn't appear to match meningitis, scarlet fever, measles, chicken pox, rubella or roseola infantum.

BettyPerske · 07/03/2012 17:46

Sounds as though it's pressure marks from something or other. Sometimes happens from carrying heavy shopping bags, that sort of thing iykwim?

TheOriginalNutcracker · 07/03/2012 17:53

Yes i was thinking that it looks like he has been grabbed, but he said he hasn't.

I have no idea at all. No temp no, and no pain anywhere else.

Will keep a close eye on him and see what it's like tomorrow i think.

You need to get a non-blanching rash looked at ASAP. Probably nothing, but needs to be looked at.

fabwoman · 07/03/2012 18:03

IS it itchy?

beautifulgirls · 07/03/2012 20:26

Please get it checked out tonight - it doesn't sounds like septicaemia, but with the smallest chance this could be tomorrow morning would be too late. Better to have wasted the doctor's time tonight than wish you had. Either way the doc needs to know anyway as this needs investigating if not septicaemia, though there will be less urgency once they are happy it is not that.

topknob · 07/03/2012 20:28

could be a purpuric rash ds had one recently on his legs, was worrying but cleared up now..as he had no other symptoms we took him to gp but he is 10 x

TheOriginalNutcracker · 07/03/2012 21:03

Have had him seen by gp. She was pretty stumped tbh, but checked him over, checked his urine which was clear, and examined his stomach.

In the end she decided that he needs a blood test to check his platelets, just to be on the safe side, so we are getting that done tomorrow.

Fingers tightly crossed that it is nothing serious.

Looks like the viral rash ds gets. He usually gets it on his face, although he has had it on his legs, and occasionally all over.

Unfortunately you should get it checked out. Even the GP usually sends ds for a blood test (despite being clearly well usually) if he's got it that extensively. Means sitting in A&E for about 4 hours, taking bloods and waiting for the results.

DeWe · 07/03/2012 21:05

Okay, x-posted.

Hope he's fine, as I said, it looks like ds, which has never been anything serious.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 07/03/2012 21:30

Thank you Dewe, hopefully it is that then. Does your ds get it often ??

DeWe · 07/03/2012 22:02

He first got it at about 3 months (luckily we were out with a GP), then again a couple of weeks later, since then he used to get it to a greater or lesser extent most illnesses. He now (age 4) doesn't get it so obviously, usually just one or two spots round his ears/temples, that I notice because I'm used to it, but no one else will.

The most scary was when you could watch it spreading down his body, actually see the spots coming out-luckily he was well in himself, so we managed to avoid being blue-lighted to hospital, just told to hurry up and get there Grin He also used to get it if he got cold, things like swimming could bring it on.

The bloods usually show something not quite right with the platelets, but on the "nothing majorly wrong" side, so just what they call a viral rash.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 07/03/2012 22:34

Thats interesting because ds has had this before but as a 9mth old baby. He had it on his knees and the gp said that it was because his dad had been tickling him there.

I always thought it was a bit odd because his dad tickled him alot but he never got it anywhere else.

He is also a very spotty/rashy child and gets a rash with most things.
