Chicken Pox

So DD2 threw up on the 16th of feb, and was under the weather for a few days. 12 days later (28th feb) she developed chicken pox blisters. So far, so normal.

DD1 threw up on the 18th feb and was under the weather too. However, 16 days later, she has no spots. Does this suggest that she hasn't got the pox? I'm treating her as if she's contagious and we haven't been swimming/girls brigade/violin etc. because I've been waiting for her to pox up and scab up. How long would you wait before assuming that maybe she hasn't caught it (drat) and could she have it with no spots? If she could, how will I know when she's clear?

I'm 32 weeks pregnant and was really hoping to get this out of the way now so that I wouldn't have the dilemma of chicken pox around the newborn/send DD1 to grandmas. I'm having a section at 38 weeks so I've got 6 weeks which I know is ages, but how has DD1 dodged it? Has anyone else had one sibling not catch it? It is doing the rounds locally.

The incubation period is up to 21 days so you're nearly there! You've done well to keep isolated for so long, hopefully (or not) you'll have escaped it this time round. Good luck with baby!

My dd has had the pox twice - and neither time has my ds caught it. I gave him a good 4 weeks to develop the spots, but nope.

Both times my dd had it, she had a slightly sore tummy the day before, and then just erupted in spots - I even found my ds licking her face, but still no luck.

Give her another couple of weeks - I think it can take up to 6 weeks to incubate?

Keeping my fingers crossed for you Smile

21 days is aaaages! Come ON spots! DD1 is so jealous of DD2's calamine patches too...

Hang on Tapir, your DD had it twice? Then why am I trying to 'get it out of the way'? It wont be out of the way at all! waaaaahhh Sad

I know! I didn't think it was possible, but the first time she had it (about 4yrs old), it was only around her armpits, tummy, and legs. My dr confirmed it was the pox, so I consoled myself by thinking she was over it all.

Then she came home from brownies and said she had a huge spot on her tummy. By the time I had a look, they were multiplying at a tremendous rate!

Ds still has never had the pox, or any other germ that his dsis brought home unlike her dad and I

Just in case anyone searches the archives for this.... DD1 got spots last night, so 14th March, having started on the 18th Feb!! So an incubation period of 25 days for her. Just when I had given up Grin

Oh! well that's very considerate Grin

I just wonder, the throwing up in the middle of Feb might have been totally unrelated?

Maybe that was just a bug they both had. Which puts dd1 catching c.pox from dd2 at roughly 14 days, which is how long it took my sister to get it from me Smile

DS2 has it since this morning so am anticipating DS1 getting it in 2 weeks or so.
I wonder how I ought to manage keeping DS1 isolated...whenabouts would he become contagious to other people, if he catches it from DS2? Is it only a few days before the spots?

Seona1973 · 14/03/2012 13:23

he would be contagious for 1-2 days before the spots appear and the incubation period is 10-21 days.

JaneB1rkin · 14/03/2012 13:26

Brill, thankyou. Have marked in diary roughly two weeks from now so I remember not to send him to any parties etc. just in case.

ShowOfHands · 14/03/2012 13:27

Grin DD did this. CP went round preschool like wildfire, everybody recovered, last week of term all children back in and spot free. Assumed dd had missed it. 2 weeks later she was absolutely covered with it.

JaneB1rkin · 14/03/2012 13:52

Showy, can I just ask you, when you got your immunity tested did it take long?

I might be pg (very very early if so) and did have it when I was little but not that badly. so Dr is going to call back about immune testing.

Sorry for hijack OP! Blush

TapirBackRider · 14/03/2012 13:53

Oh no! Hope your dd1 feels better soon Smile

ShowOfHands · 14/03/2012 14:00

It was really quick. Less than a week, just a few days. I think I had the immunity tested on the Tuesday or Wednesday or the blood taken then iyswim and I had the results before the weekend (it was bank holiday weekend and I was dithering and worried it would take until the next week).

JaneB1rkin · 14/03/2012 14:01

Oh that's great, thankyou very much.
