Newborn mucus - how long does it last?

My baby is nearly 10wks old and is still very snuffly. Last night she was coughing a lot and grunting - she (and me) had very disturbed nights sleep. Just wondered how long it will take to clear - I thought it would have gone by now! Also any ideas to help ease it?

Hi,
I took my 5 week old ds to the doctors thinking that he had a cod Blush we told it normally last until 3 months. Try elevating the head end of the cot, seems to help ds. Doctor also advised saline water spray up the nose to clear congestion.

If you search online it is also recommended that you squirt your breast milk up there as a natural remedy. Hoe your aim is good Wink Grin

Hi, congratulations on your new baby! When my DS was little and snuffly we mainly did two things: made the air in the room damp, and raised the head end of his Moses basket or cot.

For the damp warm air we put a wet towel over a radiator. This made some steam in the room which is meant to help them breathe.

Raising the head end of the Moses basket is meant to help the mucus drain away so they can breathe more easily too. Doesn't have to be raised by much, a few centimetres using a flat rolled up towel or blanket under the end of the basket. For cots you can get plastic Cot Blocks (think made by GroBag or Space Babies), like large Lego blocks which fit under the head end legs of the cot. We used these loads with DS.

If you remain concerned, just take your DC back to the GPs.
