Why is my baby vomiting?

My four month old DD brought up what seemed to be her entire bf on Fri night and since yesterday lunchtime has vomited after every meal. Apart from the odd posset when she was tiny she has never done this before. She doesn't have a temp and is perfectly happy so I am confused as to why this is happening. Could it be a bug without other symptoms?

Could he be teething? My 5m ds has vomited 3 or 4 full feeds in the past few days (the last time 5 minutes ago all over his clothes, and mine, including my last pair of clean trousers1)
Like your dd, he doesn't seem ill in any way, no temperature, etc. but I have noticed he may be overfeeding due to his teeth bothering him (he kind of half bites the nipple for a while and takes longer to feed sometimes).
He doesn't do it every time and his hunger, etc, seems ok so I am not planning on taking him to the doctor, but if your dd is doing it every time you may want to check with a medical professional. Hopefully someone else will come along soon with more advice.

She is definitely teething. I didn't realise that this could be a symptom of this. She sounds exactly like your little one in terms of hunger, not sick after every feed etc. Have fed her this morning and no puking so far. Don't think we are over it yet, but hopefully will be soon.

Good luck surviving the teeth.

I don't know whether vomiting is a symptom of teething as such, but I do think that because the teeth are bothering him he keeps on feeding when he is already full just to relieve his gums, hence the throwing up.

Good luck to you both as well, we've had a few interesting nights so far!

I just did a google search on the subject and it seems that while most doctors say it isn't a symptom of teething, a lot of parents have experienced this. I have also heard docs say that teething doesn't cause any pain or symptoms at all, so I am going to go with the parents on this one.

I have heard that swallowing a lot of saliva causes stomach upset. She is certainly dribbling a lot, so maybe this is part of the cause....

I see! It does make sense that if the excess saliva can give them sore bums it may also affect the stomach, and in ds' case, couple it with feeding more than normal, no wonder he is not keeping it in.

Thanks Olives and Dr. Google Smile

P.S.: Who do doctors have such trouble believing that teething affects not only the mouth but also other areas?

MeeWhoo · 05/03/2012 12:14

Why, not who....

Just had another. This one necessitating a bath for us both. The thing is, I knew this one was coming. She was making a funny sound when feeding, like I could hear the milk sloshing a bit in her mouth and she fed for quite a while but didn't empty my breast as efficiently as normal. I def think this is down to the teeth now and am not worried about dehydration etc as she kept down 2 full feeds today, but how do I get her to stop? If nothing else, it is creating a hell of a lot of washing and she is too short to reach the buttons. Grin
AND she now has a rash on her forehead that matches the teething rash under her chin. Surely this can't be teething related?? I will be very upset if her first two teeth appear on her head!

Mee, I suspect it is because none of them have children or wisdom teeth.

Sorry, I don't know how to make them stop the feed... Grin

I am trying to make ds pause for a bit in the middle (easier said than done) and then I am very careful when moving him right after the feed as picking him up too quickly is quite dangerous at the moment, so, unless he is falling asleep I first "sit him up" on my knee and then onto my arms instead of directly from feeding to up in my arms. Then I also I try and keep him upright for a little while afterwards instead of letting him play on his mat, which is what he wants to do.

Re, the rash, could it be that some of the milk went into her forehead? My ds got a rash the other day on the lower side of the cheek and the neck because he threw up all his feed when I picked him up to put him in his cot (hence the being very careful when picking him up now). Amazingly, even though he had just thrown up about half a litre of milk, he still wanted to sleep straight away so I changed his pj's and cleaned him up with a flannel, but didn't give him a bath and he then got the rash only on the side which had been covered in milk as I obviously didn't do a very good job cleaning him up.
Let me know if you find any magic solutions, off to do another load of washing now Wink

Ahhh, just up from a lovely night spent sleeping on towels. Just one puke at 4am, so not bad at all.

I am also being really careful to move her S-L-O-W-L-Y after each feed.

Had a giggle at your suggestion that my (poison) milk could be responsible for the rash. Had visions of myself squirting it all over her forehead. Ha ha. I understand what you mean though and that has happened to me too, but although she is quite a little gymnast, scooting around on her mat with aplomb, she hasn't managed to throw up on her head yet! Grin It is not there this morning so can't have been too harmful.

Now, off to shout at the dog for barking at the postman and waking up the baby. GRRRRR! Doesn't he realise we were awake at 4am making more washing!!!

Hello again! sorry for the "poisonous milk"suggestion, it's just that my ds tends to vomit when I am holding him, so it goes all over my clothes and then he rubs his face on it, for added effect....
Today on one of the feeds I actually heard him gag, so I swiftly took him away from the boob and gave him my knuckle to chew on. After around 20 seconds of chewing he let go and didn't ask for the boob, so I will be trying that again if I think he is overeating.
Good luck with tonight!!
