Thyroid problem in young children

I have a ds who is 20 months and a dd who is three both suffer with hypothyroidism and take thyroxine, just wondered if there were any parents out there in the same situation as me? My dd has changed so much in the last year and I'm not sure what is part of the condition and what's just her growing up!

Hi Bluerain

My DD is 13 and was diagnosed with underactive thyroid this time last year. She has type 1 diabetes and the conditions often occur together so they test for Thyroid as routine.

Has your DD had blood test recently to see if the meds are at right level? My DD has had hers doubled in the year since diagnosis - last test was Nov which I asked for as her dose was upped in July and we hadn't had it confirmed as correct. Apparently it is.

If the dose is correct then there shouldn't be any noticeable effect on her - ie should mean she behaves 'normally' for her - when you say she has changed a lot lately - in what way?

In the mean time my advice would be to get her checked to make sure meds are correct(if you haven't already).

Good luck :)

We went in feb and her dose was put up, she was diagnosed when she was 18 months old and her dose has been going up ever since. Because of her age she is under a consultant so it's not so easy to talk to someone on a regular basis, she sees him every 4 months. Her appetite goes up and down, and she has mood swings, she gets colds and bugs all the time that can last months instead of weeks. Just wondered if just her age or not and I'm I to expect it in her brother when he gets to this age?

Hi Bluerain. My DD (5) has congenital hypothyroidism so a bit different to your DCs as she was born with it. Having said that the Thyroxine has very few side affects from what I can tell. She has a much healthier appetite than my non-hypo-thy DD but does seem to get more tummy bugs although I think this most likely because she sucks her thumb and hasn't got the best toilet habits Blush. I'm hypothyroid myself and I do find that unless my dose is spot-on or slightly over my mood is affected quite significantly. Speak to your GP in between visits to the consultant about general health concerns. It might be worth asking for a referral to a Paediatrician as well - DD's thyroid consultant isn't great at sorting anything other than dose but her Paediatrician is great.

Both ds and dd were born with the condition, it was picked up originally on the heel prick test but when they redone the test the second Time it came back ok ( my consultant has since told be that the amount of blood they take on a heel prick is insefficient to properly diagnose hypothyroid and they should of done a full blood test second time round) this happen with both my children, it was because at 18 months I spoke to my health visitor about my dd sleeping situation that it get picked up! Are consultant is quite taken with the kids as it his first pair of siblings and also me or my partner don't have it either, only my mum!now I understand from talking to my health visitor that as there tsh 3 is stable they shouldn't have any symptoms and it's just her age! It all gets a bit confusing with tsh3&4 and nobody else really understands what's involved so thank you for all your help, it's nice to know we aren't the only ones

sorry to drag up an old thread but interested in your reference to your DD's sleeping habit and the link to Thyroid issues.

My DD is 2 and sleeps a good 3-4 hours in the daytime and 12 at night.

I'm concerned about the possibility of Thyroid issues but finding her consultant unhelpful :(
