Weird patchy rash - what is it and what to do?

My daugher is 3.2, fully vaccinated and already had chicken pox. She's had a bit of a cold over the past week, but nothing bad, and no fever or out.

Over the last hour a rash appeared - it's very red in big flat spots, some of them are 1x2 inch, some are smaller. First noticed on face, but also all over her body. It doesn't seem to bother or itch her. She feels well in herself.

All fine, I'd say, however, I've just returned to work last week and she's at nursery full time - so I'm not sure whether I can actually send her in with that - if it's just a viral rash they'd have no problem. But I've never seen any rash like that before.

Any idea what it could be? My google-fu is of no help this time.

no idea but a pharmacist could advise.

Slapped cheek? I found the rash came out before they started feeling bad in my dd.
To me it looked like suburn in circles.

Looking at google images it doesn't look like slaaped cheek. Have decided to phone ooh for advice. Don't want to send an infectious child to nursery, nor stay at home with a non-infectious one.

Hives? Check out pictures and if it looks like this, give her some antihistamine. My daughter used to come out in hives every time she got a virus - eventually grew out of it.

Viral rash as a result of the cold she's had?

WidowWadman · 04/03/2012 19:40

It looks like hives. OOH suggested antihistamine over the phone, which I bought. Doesn't seem to have made that much difference. Overall she's well in herself. Just worried now that nursery will not take her tomorrow. The rash is worst in her face :(

Nursery should take her if she is well in herself. Hives are not contagious! My DD spent a good portion of her time at nursery with hives all over her face. Like your DD, that was always the worst place affected...

WidowWadman · 05/03/2012 22:02

They took her no problem, which is a relief. Hives still there. It looks awful.

Could the hives be an allergic reaction to something? When my dd first came out in hives I didn't take much notice. A year later, following hives in combination with rash and swelling, she was diagnosed with a nut allergy. Just something to consider?
